i think your supposed to pick the flowers off and forgo the first year to ensure better plants/fruit in following years. but lots of people cant bring themselves to and still get fruit.

Now is an excellent time to plant them, surely?  Provided you prepare and manure the bed nicely, and the plants establish themselves quickly, there's no reason not to get a modest crop in year one.  Only if the plants look a bit feeble should you strip the flowers off, in order to allow the plants to establish themselves strongly.

Hi Phil,

Yes they will grow in growbags or containers.

They will need checking to make sure they don`t dry out and may need feeding later. You also have the option to bring them on in the greenhouse or whatever protection you have and keep the beasties off.

Good luck, Col

phil-i grow all my strawbs in big tin baths in our fruit cage cum cat run-very aesthetic it is,we have all sorts of fruit in there from cherry trees to my toms in big pots-baths with drainage holes bashed in-a layer of crocks and then a mix of horse poo and grow bag-the first year i couldnt bring myself to take the fruit off-thinking i'd regret it the next year-had a bumper crop both years-so i dont know if you really need to take off the first fruits..due to lack of space i grow lots of container veg....might try and conquer technology and post a pic of my latest orange box salad beds...

o and yes, keep an eye on the watering and this year i dress with blood fish and bone-the nutrients in containers tends to get washed away...
