Title: How much space for melons?
Post by: vaca on April 25, 2006, 15:42:43
Hello again...

I was wondering how much space I need to calculate per melon plant. For courgettes I'm assuming around 1 sq metre per plant. Whould this be about the same for a melon plant ?

Thanks,
Vaca

So I guess 4 plants would do ok in a polytunnel 6m long by 75cm wide... or should I not get greedy and just settle for 3?

Does anyone grow them outside without any protection of cloche or cold frame? If so, at what results? I've got Passport F1 which claims to be an outside variety but I'm wondering whether I ought to be taking extra precaution. I live darn sarf. Thanks!

Well mine won't have full protection as the coldframe will be left open a crack, as I simply cannot always attend twice a day to open and close the frame.

A friend of mine grows excellent grapes and melons under a glass topped lean-too, without walls. She grows greenhouse varities and despite the open sides gets excellent results.

its more a case of helping them along with temperature even in summer than a case of protection, (protection at the minute yes but a big help in summer tooo if you know what i mean lol
