No association here, more's the pity - but these are the things we talk about at home:
Pea with most seeds in the pod
Longest sweetcorn cob
Rudest looking veg

There are other alternatives to the actual garden produce of course ...

Prettiest plot
Best environmental idea (eg wind generated water pump)
Wines (always popular due to sampling ...
Processed produce, eg jams, chutneys etc

Our association doesnt have events like these, but we have several charities on site, and they have had barbeques etc, so to me it appears that having simple fun should be the objective, so even the less able gardeners feel they can win something.

We don't give prizes for the veg, but we do give prizes for things like 'most improved plot' 'best plot'.

We're hoping to have a harvest supper this year, and we've just set up a french boules club, as one of the plots has been converted to a pitch :-)

That is so cool-a french boules club-I can see a gorgeous summer evening, a glass of wine, the clink of boules.......
