Title: Happy, happy, happy
Post by: timnsal on April 24, 2006, 15:26:16
Finally recovered from cold enough to get down to the plot, and no sign of the elves despite my week away :)

10-year old not back to school till tomorrow, so he came too and helped dig potato trenches - fairly short, and not terribly deep, but it's a start. He loved it, planted the taties and wants to come again.

A bit of excavation of the nettle-covered mound at one end revealed a heap of compost, and there's something that looks vaguely soft fruit-ish - ever hopeful!

If I'd known it was so much fun, I'd have started this years ago.

me too Sally  i had a communal back garden down south which i never touched and  now think of all the years i missed.  i actually quite enjoy digging now  ::)

i did rescue a lump of lemon balm from it though, so i've got a bit of the old in the new.

glad you and son enjoyed it.   ;D

Sally glad you and your son are enjoying the allotment. I only have a garden but my grandson (next door) who is 11 likes to get in the greenhouse with me, he recently helped me sow various seeds. Only problem is that he is terrified of bees and wasps.
but daughter and I are trying to calm him over his fear and hopefully he will one day be OK.

i'm not terrified pf wasps but have to admit i don't like them and i don't mind having a go with an A4 hardback book if they're around.

bees on the other hand i've always thought were friendly useful critters and since learning a bit about thier bums from Robert i am thrilled when one comes in the garden.

i found a queen trying to get into a crack in the concrete down by the front door the other day.  thankfully the hole was too small but i must remember to go and fill it in.  there are plenty of other places she can build her nest without me having to trip over it every time i come out of the door !  another daft one got stuck in the greenhouse yesterday, frantically buzzing around looking for a way out.  i tried to help without hindering as she was getting a bit irate and she eventually found the door.  would have hated for her to have been trapped on a hot day !

Yes it's amazing what fears people have. Take me (silly thing to say I can almost hear my kids saying yes please ;D ;D) From a very young child  I have always had dog/dogs. Mainly over the past fifty years have had German Shepherds and Labradors until we got this pesky Cavalier King Charles six years ago but I am terrified of other peoples dogs, hence I never take Elsa for a walk. Lots of games indoors and in the garden and young Lorna takes her for walks when she has time.
The stupid thing is that I love dogs. Oh well!!

Clowns scare the b'jesus out of me.

There are no critters that scare me, though I was scared of cows as a kid, after being trampled by stampeeding heffers.

I was going to say that I hadn't realised clowns were a major pest on allotments - then I thought about some of the recent problems ...

I met the lady on the plot opposite today. She tells me that my neighbour has a 14 year old grandson, who has Downs syndrome, and loves digging. She thinks he is probably my mystery helper. Makes sense to me. I'll look out for him :)

Two people asked me where things were. I knew the answer for one of them!
