Title: Garden Tools
Post by: MonsterMum on April 24, 2006, 13:28:14
Hi,

Does anyone know where I might be able to get garden tools as cheaply as possible?

Hi b_b-b,

Try Cherry lane garden centre on the A140 just pass the Pulhams and before Long Stratton.

I have found Wilkinsons to offer decent tools at very good value for money. You don't really need many tools to start, buy them as you need, rather than get them all at once.

You could also try freecycle (yahoo recycling swap groups) or even car boot sales. :)

All you need to start with is a fork, possibly a spade depending on your soil and how many docks you have to get out, a trowel, a hoe, a couple of buckets a length of string and some sticks. Once you get that far, get the rest as you find you need them. Don't compromise on trowels, the ones made out of one piece of metal are useless, they just bend. Look for one with the blade welded on. A thermos or a small stove makes a big difference in cold or wet weather.

It pays to be friendly with the old timers at the allotment, I have been given the contents of two sheds by old timers who are giving up their allotments.

Some say it's false economy buying cheap tools and I tend to agree to some point. The sad thing is, you can pay quite a lot and still end up with cr*p. I daresay if you ask others they will soon tell you what not to buy, which narrows it down a bit. Then car boots definitely, and lucky old amphibian eh? The old stuff is definitely the best, if not the most stylish and shiny. Old stuff by definition has already lasted a long time, which means it's not about to expire as soon as you get it home. Happy hunting.  ;D

Geoff.

;D Hand me downs or car booty are best as you won't be so broken hearted when the "Chavs" move in and nick em, I have a surplus of hand me downs and car booty spades, forks, hoes etc: at home in readyness for the uninvited guests :D
