All of my artichoke plants appear to have immature flowers coming. Would I be correct in assuming it is now to late to sever side shoots to give away as cuttings?
I wouldn`t think so EJ, just cut back the flower stems .
Thank you Stephan! I will sort so bits out then Aqui and DP. ;D
"Doing a happy dance" ;D
I've grown artichokes from seed for the first time this year, in my greenhouse. When should I plant them out?
I'm growing some this year too. Was about to plant mine out as they look a fair size to me - then happened to read my seed packet that said "plant out end of May." So I'm going to wait another 3 weeks or so. HTH!
I think around now would be fine. They are much tougher than books would have one to believe
And they are FAB plants! ;D ;D ;D
I'm also doing the happy dance!
Me too... ;D
Mine stay out all year round, I mulch with straw and they do fine.
Beautfiul plants.
I planted some from seed last year...and have already eaten 4 artichokes so far this year!
Blimey, 4 this year, mine are just waking up from the winter and I think I have lost a few
Great, will get them hardened off and out in a couple of weeks! :)
Don't think mine are happy either, I had several coming a month or two back -but then we had more frost and it looks like they've died. The other possibility is that the slugs are getting them as soon as they come up.
Mine didn't die down at all over winter. The Cardoon the same. There is one gap in the row, but I dug that plant up, and fortunately enough, thanks to a rather fine allotmenteer chum, I have a couple of purple ones I can bung in! Now the worry for the 2 happy dancers is the plants are vast and I can't see where to slice of babies! I am on the case though.
