Title: Garlic - an honest question -
Post by: tim on April 21, 2006, 18:17:32
All the garlic that we've seen here in 'how's it doing' has been very yellow.
Presumably Autumn planted?

Yet this January planted lot is not. Is it frost or what??

I planted mine in January and it looks very similar - certainly not going yellow (touch wood!)  ::)

Well mine was winter planted, and after I weeded around it today I thought how green and straight and strong it all looked! (A miracle for my rotten plot!)  Every single clove I planted has grown.  I wonder rather than frost if it is sitting in cold wet ground that yellows things up?

Mine came through the worst of the winter and looks fine. I have one plant of elephant garlic that looks yellow, that's all.

planted mine at the end of December and they've all appeared and look quite strong and healthy, but a couple are turning yellow at the tips - assumed it was because we've not had much rain (in Sheffield)

GOOD GRIEF ... THAT'S A 1ST FOR SHEFFIELD!!!! (I'm from there originally!)

My garlic's gone yellow as well (planted in December) but the elephant stuff is doing ok.

Standard garlic was planted mid October? and has yellowing tips (not excessively mind you), whereas the elephant garlic was planted about 4 weeks later and is very verdant. Sorry no pictures ...

Our allotments show exactly the same response.   January planted garlic is noticably  free from the yellowing tips that is present on that which was  planted in the autumn, though the latter is naturally more robust.   I wonder if this is always the case!

The problem on our allotments is certainly not due to lack of rain.   I was actually wondering if it was due to having had far too much.   The ground has been sodden for nearly a month.   (West Lancs.)

I have to same differences between my Autumn and late winter plasted Garlic.  Same difference is true between my overwintering and maincrop onions.  Chucked some chicken manure pellets on them yesterday.

Planted mine in January. All growing strong and green. Yellowing is a sign of deficiency and occurs due to a lack of nutrients in the soil or waterlogging.

with the elephant garlic, is everyone growing it for the full 2 years or has anyone harvested after just one?

Im unsure whether mine will succumb to white rot if left in over winter, especially if its a wet winter.

Two years? I presumed it bulbed up in its first year just as normal garlic does?

There's nothing in the information I had from the Garlic Farm to suggest that it needs more than one year. I'll be lifting mine as soon as it starts dying back.

Mat,
It looks fine. I wish I had got my a**e out of gear & planted some!
On the other hand , with the 'extended winter', maybe I would not have produced what you guys have achieved.
Envy you a lot!

My November planted garlic is all green, and has survived the 8" of snow we got a fortnight ago.
