Title: Broad Beans
Post by: purple sprouting on April 20, 2006, 23:03:41
Can anyone help me?  I planted my Broad Beans in March, not the ideal time I know, however my plants went in 'good and healthy' and very strong examples grew (more luck at the time than skill!!).

Something is eating them.  It isn't snails or slugs.  Don't think it's the birdies.  Just very tiny bites out of the leaves (serating the edges around the leaves) I don't know how else to describe the damage except that I have seen ladybirds on similar plants on the site (no damage to plants)....but no ladybirds on my beans.

Does anyone have any idea???  Any suggestion very welcome.

Take a look at this thread and see if it's the same problem?

I will confess that I don't have the answers but I have the same problem. However I have not found it to be a major problem ...

It's Pea and Bean Weevil, don't worry too much. the plants'll usually shrug it off

Thank you all for your help.........the broad beans don't look better or worse than they did, so hopeully they will recover.

Kind regards

it seems that if theyare beyond a certain stage they survive the weevil ok, but i dusted mine with derris dust , I found that they were moving onto my newly emerging pea shoots which were definately not up to defending themselves.  If youhave new pes coming through, them i would consider derris dust.

Depends on the variety - what are they?

They are Meteor F1s.

Don't know that one sorry but do not think it is a dwarf - therefore I think it will grow to about 75 centimetres - they may require a bit of support.

just been reading about broad beans in my monty book and he says to support them put a cane at each end of the row and tie string round that - does that work? if it's a long row should I put canes half way down as well?

thanks
