Title: Passionflower cuttings - how? and when??

I have a lovely healthy passionflower (centaurea).

Label says it can withstand temps to -10.

It has only ever been in a south facing conservatory so do not want to put it outside until summer.

How do I take cuttings and when???

Debs. I have a passionflower but sorry haven't a clue how to take cuttings.(just to prove your post has been read ;D ;D)

Likewise, I have one grown from seed - never tried to take a cutting.

This webpage is all about taking cuttings from passiflora. Maybe it has some useful information, although personally, I would ignore the stuff about phases of the moon to take cuttings by :)

Have taken 2 cuttings but its prob wrong time as there are lots of flower buds coming on plant.

As far as my experience goes, just like any other cutting.. Chop a bit of fairly sturdy growth off, around 15cm. Chop top off. Stick in soil/water, wait. And wait. And wait.

When I was in the French Alps last Sept, I was delighted to find that a restaurant had stuck some Passiflora (violacea?) foliage in a vase on the table. I swiped it, wrapped it in a food bag/cottonwool. And then we drove 15 hours back. And it's been sat in a pot since then, and only just burst into growth.

I'd guess the main thing is to try and get older growth rather than new floppy shoots. If it's caerulea you have, Americans reckon it's hardy to at least -20 C. According to them, us Brits mollycoddle our plants..

I shall take more cuttings from non-flowering stems - would love a passiflora or two in the garden.

An extract from my website;


Week 30;  take 75mm (3") long stem cuttings

Insert them into pots containing equal parts (by volume) peat and  sharp  and root at a minimum temperature of 16°C(60°F).

When rooted, pot the cuttings singly into 75mm (3") pots of potting compost, and  pot on as necessary until the plants are in their final pots.

If planning on growing these cuttings outside, gradually harden them off prior to planting out.
