Title: Do you always feel the weight?
Post by: tim on April 11, 2006, 13:08:01
- when choosing lettuce, cauli, cabbage, celery etc?

Even breaded fish? 4 packs today - gross weight, against 540g nett = 604g, 614g, 628g, 644g. Pennies perhaps, but it adds up??

Yes, have recently noticed:

Pre packs of 375/400g rather than 450 or 500g
The scales that used to hang at the end of the fruit and veg counter have gone missing so you can't check for value/weight or calculate what you can afford to buy. I always mention it.

Another reason to avoid the supermarket!

Yes, I had noticed the scales had gone.  A nuisance if you want to make sure you have enough for a particular recipe.  I am sure the supermarkets benefit from me buying way too much to make sure I have enough.

I have been aware of the pack sizes changing, added to which I have boys of 12 and 14 who can't stop eating so I am having to buy so much more, can't keep up with them!  The toaster seems to be constantly on in my house, but they still eat everything put in front of them and they are so thin.
Don't take after me!

Think we need a thread featuring 'lo-weight' recipes - you know, those involving those foods, ie celery,  where, apparently, you use up more calories digesting them than you ingest eating them :(

The challenge would be making them fun :-\

;D

Whilst sneering at the supermarket the other day (thinking, "next year I will not be here, having my own produce to eat") I noticed that the scales were missing. Thought about mentioning it and changed my mind. It was the fear of being seen as mean, or tight, that stopped me!! Not usually backward in coming forward...just shows how much power the supermarkets have!!

Hadn't noticed the scales vanishing, but then it has been so long since I had to buy fruit and veg (smug grin) that I am not suprised!  :P

However, as caulis are a constant failure for me, (this year will be different!!), I do periodically pick one up in Asdas if the farm shop are out.  I am the slightly eccentric woman others steer wel clear of as I am the one peeling back the leaves, looking at the curds, looking for a good sized one that is heavy because of the flower rather than weight of stems and leaves, one where the curds aren't yellow or black!  ;D

In the Fens you can buy a large sack of maincrop spuds for storing for a couple of quid, direct from the farmer. A mile down the road in Tesco, people are spending that much on a few imported spuds in sweaty plastic bags.
???

Re caulis e-j, they don't perform well for me either, so they don't earn space on the plot*. But white sprouting broccoli do. I shared out all my Perpetual cauli seedlings so had none left to try myself, but reports from the field are good.

*Note: the caulis are responsible for poor performance, not the grower 8)

Thankfully, when you're comparing weights, you don't need scales.

Good point about the stalks, Emma.
