Title: what can be planted with potatoes?
Post by: cowellen on April 09, 2006, 19:50:56
I have just planted my potatoes (so excited - first thing I have planted in my new allotment  ;D)

I've got lots of bags of different seeds  ???

What is best  - to go in the same bed as my  potatoes? (don't ask what spuds they are - ???)
  :(

What are the seeds? Someone suggested putting broad beans in the same holes as first earlies, but since the spuds are already in it's a bit late for that, and I wouldn't mix them otherwise. Spuds have a habit of swamping out the light, and not much else would stand a chance with them.

Hey cowellen
Depending how much room you have for growing and earthing up the spuds, and you don't want anything greedy for water or light around them like pumpkin, squash, cukes, sunflowers, toms (same family, eek) or raspberries.
If you have room you could plant beans, sweetcorn, cabbage, horseradish (at the corners of the patch), marigolds, dead nettle, flax, amaranth. I sometimes grow a few quick lettuces in the dip between earthed up rows.
Hope you got some of those seeds!

Sweetcorn is supposed to do well with potatoes, though I've never tried them together as I'm only just starting out myself. I think the idea is that the potatoes keep the soil covered and moist, which is just how the sweetcorn likes it, plus they don't shade each other out.

Coriander is supposed to be good as well. Deters some of the bugs that find spuds appealing.

tHANKS Supersprout - ive wrote all that down (i've got all those seeds ;)) but what needs to go in the corners - the horseradish?

Could i grow a square of sweetcorn next to the potatoes?

Many Thanks from MOO ;) :)

Horseradish will be nice in the corner(s) but BEWARE it is a weed around here in the Fens and can spread everywhere but I love it.
You could grow your sweetcorn next to, or among the patooties once you've earthed them up, if they're spaced far enough apart. If you planted out your sweetcorn, say, in June in the furrows, the patootie plants would spread out and keep the shallow sweetcorn roots moist like onionhead says, and any watering you did for the shallow rooted sweetcorn would benefit the spuds. Or grow in a block next to each other.
I haven't even ordered my sweetcorn seed yet! :o ;)
