Title: Onions - Have I planted too deep ?
Post by: Stork on April 04, 2006, 21:50:17
Hi All,

I put about 150 onions sets into a raised bed a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure the packet said put them two inches below the surface which I did. Then I see Monty Don telling me the top half of the set should be proud of the surface of the soil.

So - Have I simply buried my onions?  Here's hoping not.

Hi Stork

Planted about the same amount as you yesterday but
from what i have read you should push them into the soil
so that just the tip are are showing through the soil.

Two inches does seem a bit deep but most times nature outs things right. If you just push them into the soil you can compact the soil so that as they start to make roots they push up and out, better to move the soil with a trowel and place rather than push.

As they grow they should make themselves more level I think. I have noticed that most sets push upwards naturally, so planting slightly deeper than you think may actually be a good thing.

I always plant onions deep...otherwise the birds pull them out! everyone at my allotment area does the same...and we all get good results. so don't worry, stork.
