Title: Identification please?
Post by: jennym on April 04, 2006, 20:23:50
Can anyone identify this for me? It emerges in spring, and I think it has pink flowers. (could be yellow) The leaves are papery, like a daffodil, but much larger and paler. The slugs usually attack it. It is starting to spread, with smaller plants emerging around the garden. I show a picture of the leaves as they are today, and also some roots of a smaller one I dug up. Is it likely to become a nuisance?

Do the flowers look like lilies? If so, it could be a daylily.
If it flowers in autumn it could be Schizostylis. Both spread fairly quickly, though I wouldn't class them as a nuisance.

Looks to me like a day lily too. I would say def not a schizostylis as it has different bulbs/roots. And I have just checked a small one in a pot & the roots are thich & fleshy as in the picture. If it is a day lily, (or hemeracalis as we should say), it shouldn't be a problem. I have a few clumps including the common orange one & they don't spread too much.

I think it depends on the variety. I have Golden Chimes and Hyperion, which spread slowly, and one called Autumn Red (though it flowers in the summer!) which is much more vigorous.

It does look like a hemarocalis the growth pattern of the leaves is quite destinctive. However most day lilies have rather more strap like leaves than the photo shows and they are not normally attacked by slugs to any extent. How tall is it when in flower?

I've got an established day lily (yellow flowered) but the leaves are alot thinner! However, Jenny if you decide to pull it out I'll gladly take some off your hands  :P looks like a lovely plant!

Larkspur - as I recall, the flower is held at least 6 inches above the leaves, the whole height being about 2ft high, maybe more. Wish I had a photo of the flower.
:(
I think it may be a hemerocallis though, now I've looked at some pictures, but I can't find any varieties with such broad leaves shown.

cardinalflower - will pm you if I get any to come up without too much damage, otherwise it'll be when they've died back again?
