Title: Button mushrooms - advice please
Post by: Georgie on April 03, 2006, 17:50:02
I am now the proud owner of a mushroom growing kit.   ;D  The instructions say to grow them on at 18 degrees C but do not mention the light conditions.  I'm assuming they prefer shade.  Am I right?

i got a kit from Woolworths and you just sat the lid on top to keep it dark it's in my green house as that's warm but it is dark where the mushrooms will grow.

Hi Vez.  Do you keep the lid on even when the mushrooms are growing?

Georgie, I've got a mushroom kit on the go in my breakfast room and have already had a good crop of mushrooms from it.  The temperature is about 65°F.  My pack says to sit the lid on top of the box.  It has to be kept moist and out of sunlight.

yes Georgie you kee the lid on but you just balance it on top of the polystyrene(sp) base so that the air can circulate but it's still dark, also got to keep it moist. MIy kit has nice step by step instructions on it so I just look at what I've got to do next. this is a first time for me growing them.

Thanks for your help Vez and Pauline.  Aww Littlegem, that's a pity.  Maybe you over-watered them?  My instructions said the compost should be damp but not wet.
