Title: leeks- germination time/temp?
Post by: caroline7758 on April 02, 2006, 13:48:47
The sunny intervals between the showers this week have really brought on all the stuff in my greenhouse- except my leeks. I only sowed them a week ago, so maybe I'm being impatient, but I just wondered if it might have got TOO hot for them. What do you think?

Speaking honestly, leeks are one thing I don;t tend to put in the greenhouse, they go in a large deep pot and sit on an outside table. Thank you for reminding me though, I need to sow my maincrop leeks today ... (Giant Winter)

Caroline a lot depends on the germination if you have heat in the greenhouse or not.  I planted a couple of trays about 3 weeks ago and put them in a propagator amongst some other trays of seeds, the temp was about 16C, they were up in about 9 days.  Have grown them without heat and they have taken a good two weeks to come through.

They are in an unheated propagator in an unheated (apart from the sun) greenhouse. Guess I'll wait another week & see what happens.

sowed my Musselburghs on 22/3 on a sunny window sill (oh how that makes me laugh) in the living room (heated).  Removed their polybag covers today and moved them to the unheated bedroom.  they're still kinda bended in two but about 2" long i suppose.

we shall see.

Leek seed now planted in a large pot, and the weather very kindly made sure they were well watered ...  :)
