Title: Had a harvest yet?
Post by: Garden Manager on March 31, 2006, 10:28:41
I have. Pulled the first crop of rhubarb the other day and enjoyed rhubarb crumble that evening. Mmmm!

Next to harvest will the the 'winter' cabbages, that are bursting out of their fleece covering as i type this.

Can anyone match this? (Answer: Probably  ;) ;D)

What crops have YOU harvested so far this year?

I just love to hear about peeps harvesting all four seasons on the lottie. Yesterday we picked and pulled a basket of white and purple sprouting broccoli (first crop!), January King cabbage (more like Art than Vegetable), armsful of spinach (curry for 10 tonight), and the last of the leeks :'(

Sucks to the hungry gap! ;D ;D ;D

Still digging leeks and parsnips, though the parsnips are starting to sprout again so might be time to lift them for souping.

There are also sprouts and black kale on the go but the carrots are now finished. Had to buy some this week, sob. Though the pot grown early carrots are only a week or so away from harvesting.

But like you I am about to pick the first rhubarb and we have been picking lambs lettuce and cut and come again lettuce for a few weeks now so no more buying lettuce until November I hope!

I've also had some of my beautiful 'forced' rhubarb - first time I've done this myself - have never eaten it  'so young & fresh'.....just fantastic

gently poached it with soft brown sugar, zest from half a large orange & 1 tablespoonful of orange juice......served with ice cream....absolutely delic.!! :P

Last of the leeks, a rogue swede an d a couple of experimental (left in) parsnips

I dug a path last weekend and harvested a lot of broken glass that had buried along with a few chicken skeletons! Broken glass grows quite well on my lottie and is a perennial it just appears year after year  :'( :'( :'( :'(

I should point out that my rhubarb was NOT forced. It just grew naturaly (with a little protection from the greenhouse.)

My rhubarb is growing outside, unforced and without protection. I could harvest it, but I'm still eating last year's out of the freezer.

All I've had is some chard, sage and rosemary - my parsnips, leeks and brassicas all failed to do anything (must try harder!)

SPROUTS, SPROUTS AND MORE S***ING SPROUTS  ::)

Sprout fricasse, sprout rissotto, sprout soup, sprout en croute, sprout a la king, sprout surprise, sprout a l'orange, boiled sprouts, fried sprouts etc etc etc.

Pulled up the last plant today and gave it to the chickens, couldn't face another one if you paid me!

Still picking rocket and rosemary and the rhubub is just coming through.

Better organised this year ... will be planting stuff that we can harvest all year round  :)

This was my little harvest from midweek.  The last of my sprouts, a good pick of white sprouting brocolli, daffs and cavalo nero kale.  I haven't stopped harvesting yet, which is incredibly satisfying.  My bubby is pickable, but I thought I would leave it for one more week before having my first light pickings. ;D

About 30 of the darn things supersprout.  Some have gone really moldy, much to the kids delight, so they ended up in the compost heap.  They do go really odd as they start to break down!  Some just turn to water...some go black, and some grow lovely fur coats!  ;D

The daffs are all open now.  I really must remember to buy another sack of cheapo bulbs in the summer and get them in alongside the others on the plot.  It is nice to be able to go up and cut a bunch of flowers, but I was about 2 days to late and at least half had opened, so I didn't bother to cut those.  It does look lovely on the plot seeing the flowers glowing in the spring sunshine!

When I started this thread i was hoping to have a report of further harvest. Alas not as expected. My overwintering cabbages have proved a great disapointment and have not produced the crop i was anticipating (see seperate thread for details).

I am glad to see you are all getting some nice early harvests.

Rhubarb next weekend I reckon - only started planting the veg area up last autumn, but the rhubarb has had lots of TLC & horse muck and is looking lucious.

Spinach beet and chard are putting out new growth - had spinach beet with our supper tonight, lovely to be picking it again. Will probably be making some sorrel soup next week, perhaps followed with rhubarb crumble - can't wait!

My rhubarb's sprouting well, but I won't be picking till next month. Let it reach full size, so that it goes further! We always eat the lot, whenever we start.

Hi all
Isn't it great still to picking and using previously stored crops.

Sad day today as the last of the Savoy's has just been picked and the sprouts are sprouting they have been dug up.
Still Purple sprouting is going well, a few leeks left and Butternut squash still OK.

Harvested this week: leeks and parsnips, curly and ragged jack kale, rocket, lambs lettuce and texel greens, flat leaved and curled parsley and theer are two more winter lettuces.  Sprouts have finished, purple sprouting broc. not yet started.  I have put some cover on the rhubarb just to speed them up a bit (and because I've never tried forcing them).  sadly the garden is pretty wet after last week.

Leeks and parsnips still being dug, although like other peoples' the 'snips are sprouting again and will be lifted next week and either made into soup or mashed and frozen. The Leeks are delicious fried in a little butter though!!  ;)

We recently finished the last of the leeks, and we've had a couple of pickings of rhubarb.

The rhubarb crown that I broke up at the end of last year has sprung into the most amazing growth.  I've also planted 6 new crowns this spring, thinking the old one had had it, so next year we're going to have more rhubarb than you can shake a stick at. ;D

Daffs, tulips, primroses all flourishing but I am loathe to pick them as they seem to die very quickly in the central heating.

Of  this year's crops only rhubarb so far which I used in amphibian's Brown Betty Rhubarb (delish change from crumble - its in Recipes) - until today when I cut my very first two Asparagus spears which I then went away and left in the shed! >:(

I just harvested my first winter lettuce (Arctic King). It was heavenly. There's a nice photo here http://www.mytinyplot.co.uk/ (sorry haven't worked out how to put pics up here yet).

Other than that the perpetual spinach has gone crazy over the last few weeks and I've harvested twice from that. Also some herbs. But that's it for now.

Hi there,

we only got our plot (at the time very overgrown!) in september so I put in loads of winter veg.

We're currently harvesting winter raddish, turnip, lettuce (Arctic king), endive, landcress, white/purple sprouting broccoli, several different types of Kale and cabbages, sprouts, spinache, cauliflower and the maystar cauliflowers are fattening up nicely. Also had a couple of winter carrots but they were TINY..

We put in well over 120 brassicas and have a mammoth glut... lesson learned for next year!

Am itching to harvest something but first year so am leaving the rhubarb and asparagus alone (the only things that are potentially harvestable so far!).  I had hoped for radishes at least by now but they are still tiny despite being in there for weeks - I think maybe it was too cold when I first sowed - the leaves have been munched by somerthing also, so I think I need another sowing.

I've had Rhubarb and about 6 stalks of Asparagus -I've decided to take one per plant this year.

I'm lucky having the greenhouse -we've has one lettuce and one Hispi cabbage -both sown in Jan, + a few radish -although they've been a bit neglected and now gone woody.

I meant to pich rhubarb this weekend but my wife cooked so I'm leaving it till the weekend; when I do rhubarb crumble everyone eats vast helpings and very little else for a couple of days.
