I just wondered if anyone else here usually buys Westland multipurpose with John Innes for seed sowing? I just got three bags (3 for 2) of the new season's stuff, and was disappointed to discover that the contents didn't have nearly as much perlite in, which seems to have been replaced by uncomposted fluffy shredded wood!!!
I know they've got to reduce peat use but this is a bit daft. I had to sieve out the fluff!
Anyone else notice this or have I a duff batch?

I don't get that particular brand. But have noticed the same thing with other compost. I seived out more than I used of a bag I bought on special offer from Sainsbury's (impulse buy - was a bargain!) maybe it is like most things, you get what you pay for.
That wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't that the brand wasn't the most expensive at the GC!
Just been to their website and complained. I suspect this is their revolutionary new ingredient "west+" - if they say that it is, then they will get a sharp GOODBYE and I shall go and find another brand!!!

A chap from are plots was saying the same as you Saturday & i think it was the same brand.
I had a prompt reply from Westland - yes it is the new ingredient and then he just gave me the marketing spiel that's in all the press releases. Maybe it does make it easier wetting and it's renewable etc but it's not what I want.
I thanked the chap for replying and then told him I would be looking elsewhere from now on. Pity. Been darn good sowing compost for a multipurpose up to this point.
Going back to 100% JI seed compost I think. :(

My Bowers compost is the same, full of fluff and hair, hard to work with as a small disturbance to one area can be transferred through the fluff to quite another area, pricking out can be very hard.
I use wickes compost & thats fine 8)
