i've got my wad in my pocket (albeit a very small wad) and am itching to press the "buy now" button, but thought i'd ask your opions first.
i'm looking at a Norfolk-Greenhouses Ultimate Popular 6 but am wondering how stable/durable these are. my garden bears the brunt of small hurricanes sometimes so needs to be fairly robust.
anyone got any experiences to share ? should i sacrifice size for strength or have you got one of these in the garden that's already "lasted for years".
thanking you all kindly.
Hi MrsKP
I have just put up the ultimate 4 at my plot.
when i was putting it up i thought this thing will never last as it wobbled all over the place :-\ but once i glazed it it was solid 8)
My mate has had one for 2 years now & he is happy ;D
But they do take a time to put together ???
cheers tel. did you build it per the instructions, or did you add some extra bits to beef it up ? i've seen people mention additional clips for bubblewrap in other posts.
what is the back vent like, and did you get an auto solar roof thingy ? and without the need for a base, how does it stay secured to the floor ? the last thing i need is it take of a la Dorothy in the wizard of oz. :o
muchos gracias
mrs kp
Yes as per instructions. the back vent is just a bit of plastic 2mm thick i need to work on that . ???
i built a 4"by 2" timber base then pegged it to the ground & fixed the Gh to that.
No roof thingy :o
It is cheep & cheerfully i will try to get a pic of it to show you if you want
oh yes please tel if you could that would be excellent. i know for that money i'm not going to get a palace, but i have to be realistic.
i wish i could afford an all singing/dancing one, but i want one and i want it now ;D
My neighbour has a perfect glassed 8 x 6 GH which she'll sell for £50, trouble is that your a bit far away from Warrington!!!
Kev >:( >:(
that is a big problem up here KevB. i've been keeping my eyes peeled for a while now and the nearest second hand one i've found is about an hour away but i don't think my nerves would cope with half a ton of glass in the back of the car, especially as i found out from a very nice bus driver today that my brake lights don't work :o.
so my early saturday morning will now be spent down the garage :-X bad words bad words
:'(
ok ....... clear "glass" panels like the norfolk ones, or polycarbonate safety glazing ...... pros & cons please. sorry to be such a pain, but you guys know better than i and i want to learn from your mistakes :P
Hi MrsKP
will get pic on in the morning
The Norfolk is polycarbonate roof but perspek sides
cheers tel, i was just wondering whether the polycarb would offer a bit too much shading. maybe i should have a little more faith in my sun/summer weather.
::)
Is this the Mrs. KP who's just had a new Shed talking about having a greenhouse now?
Indeed, a Woman of Property 8)
Great stuff, Mrs. KP - congrats! ;D
Lishka
new hoos last august which came with NO useful additions.
ok the decoration was acceptable for the next 5 years (well it would have to be with our decorating skills/energies) ....... so i'm playing with my plot ;D. once the money's gone it's gone, so best invest now while there's some still there. :P
some of the nasturtiums went in today, i did try to wait a bit longer but thought dammit, you're going in ;D
good luck with the nasturtiums, then. Sure they'll be fine - Lish :)
cheers m'dear and once again many thanks.
the old chap i used to live next to said "you'll never need another packet" and i'd saved loads from that garden and i have no idea where they all went last summer :o
i can't wait until everything starts happening ;D
I can't remember what make mine is MrsKP, but it came with four sprags, one for each corner, which it recommended sinking in concrete (or some such aggregate). I didn't use a base of any sort and haven't had any trouble yet - five years, and I too am troubled by the wind. If you see what I mean. :o
Don't sacrifice size. Whatever size you get, it won't be big enough next year. I think strength is 'designed in' these days.
Geoff.
Back again. Glass vs polycarb: I read somewhere that glass allows a broader frequency of UV light through, which apparently is good. But to judge from the enormous number of polytunnels in use, it can't be so much different. I suspect that polycarb might be more expensive to replace though, assuming that, like most plastics these days, it is programmed to degrade and go brittle after a few years. Also the weight of glass will make it more of a problem for the wind to shift.
Geoff.
This is the gh 2 pic from the front 1 from the side & 1 of the window.
gawd tel, i didn't mean for you to get up and the crack of dawn !!!!
thanks so much and hey !!! you got a bath too
;D
That's not a bath, KayPee, modern idiom...that's a "feature plunge-pool" ;D
oh and thanks to you too euronerd, i missed your responses as i was busy examining tim's pics.
i think i've decided to go for the ultimate 6. now to find out there's a 6 week lead time !!!!! keep your fingers crossed.
;D

Oh no!! How can you bear waiting?! You'd better ask Dan2 to start a countdown ;D ;D ;D
lol ........... the button's been pushed but they have to ring back on monday to take the payment. just hope i'm not in court (jury service) otherwise i might have to excuse myself to the judge while i go and do "urgent business" of my own.
;D
So how big is it, KayPee, or have I missed it in the thread? And where will it be sited in relation to The Shed?
i got a 6' x 6' norfolk-greenhouse ultimate (not sure what's ultimate about it, i think it's got slightly thicker perspex although i could be entirely wrong), solar vent, staging, and a wee parafin heater for £251 which if everything holds up, i didn't think was that bad. i'm not going to bother with a base, but get a couple of bags of easy concrete to hold the thing down, so there's not real other expense (apart from my temper when i'm building it).
it's going where the horizontal pallet is in the pic. the sun will hit the left hand-end about 11am every morning (fingers crossed) so it will get it as long as it's out. i've got to get out there and level it off properly. once it's erected, it will have about 3" of soil along one length and the the patio brick wall along the other length so that will provide a bit of extra support.
i love thinking out loud about it all cos then it seems all the more real, so thanks for listening ;D
silly moo, forgot the pic ::)
:o
Right. You have a shed, a greenhouse, and now I discover you have a PALLET!!!!!!!!!!
Truly madly deeply jealous beyond belief now!!!!!!
;D
LOL Katy!
Hey KayPee, that cold frame you've got.....I've got 3 of those...how do you stop the lid from blowing off?
And your garden deffo looks a 'work in progress' ;) ;D Exciting, or wott!!
and don't forget the bath (out of shot) ;D, verily i live in a palace ;D
i don't mate, not figured that one out yet. i was thinking of tying "heavy things" to the lid prop. i must admit to havnig reservations about the strength of it, but must admit that it hasn't moved yet. i've not got much in there atm. i will have a bit of a pot move round tomorrow i think and make some room in the plastic greenhouses.
So what have you bought from Morrisons then? They got any bargains?
lol they were full of my free topsoil ;D
A shed, a greenhouse, a jacuzzi, a pallet, andfree topsoil ??? 8) Riches unlimited....
btw..my frames are firmly anchored to the ground with tent pegs....bit difficult to do when it's on concrete, tho...you on good terms with your neighbours? My lids have landed next door bfore now - and the hedge is 8' high.....
Frame nearly done !!! and the wind was kind enough to die down for a bit.
Tel - you didn't tell me you had to have fingers the size of sprouting spring onions to get some of these screws in ;D
How many times have you dropped the littel beggars then ;D
Imagine my delight when one of our gardeners, who's a landscaper, asked me if I had any use for 3 greenhouses. One of his customers wanted them removing from his garden. Duly dismantled, two went to needy tenants and I had the curved roof one which turned out to have automatic windows too! I'm still keeping my ears open for a jacuzzi and a pallet though.
lol Tel......... i think the neighbours shut their windows with all the swearing when the bits kept disappearing down the cracks between the slabs lol
djbrenton ......you haven't lived til you've got a pallet. it was very handy for lifting me up that wee bit to do roof. and i was waving a drill around frantically yesterday putting drainage holes in the base of the jacuzzi. reading on another thread about qualified electricians having to install power to the shed and there's my extension lead hanging over the greenhouse and the runner bean trellis keeping it out of the mud. mind you i did have my "safety" rubber clogs on ::) ;D
'Qualified Electrician' 'Qualified Plumber' .....er...hello?
Gotta put on my 'Qualified Corgi Gas Fitter' hat sometime this coming week when I swap over gas cookers....
8) ;D
ANYWAY...has rain stopped play at yours this afters? Had hail, easing off to cold rain here..
My next door neighbour's new shed (old plot and new one) is almost totally built out of pallets.
snow stopped play with the greenhouse which is now weighted down with a couple of sandbags and various other heavy things. :o
i could almost write a Deeds type story about the OH under the sink swapping the outside tap from hot to cold, but i wouldn't be able to do it justice.
i did say, "stop being loud, you make me nervous !". there is still a sopping wet towel in the middle of the kitchen floor which gives you an idea of what was happening.
i did get the carrot bed filled though, so one step closer ... baby steps lol.
oh and i fell badly off the wagon at midnight, i'll try again tomorrowl ;D
