Tuesday - Bright and clear this morning, but very windy.
I was awoken bright and early with Ted bounding out of bed, getting very excited about using the chainsaw. The neighbouring farmer arrives as promised, with the said weapon. “E’yar me ’ansome, I be back dreckly†he says, thrusting the chainsaw into Ted’s hot little hands, and makes a fast exit. Wandering out into the garden bleary-eyed and clutching a mug of tea I see Ted musing over the chainsaw, trying to fathom out which way is up. One pull on the stringy thing and it bursts into life scattering the birds with its roar, over which is heard “bl**dy hell.â€
First sacrificial timber was the cross-beam that used to hold the roof up in the middle. I spotted a look of glee on his face as is sliced through one end like a hot knife through butter. Overcome with enthusiasm, he leapt at the other end to repeat the exercise, completely oblivious to the effects of gravity. The beam landed with a heavy thud narrowly missing said Ted, and terrifying the cat, which promptly headed for the field next door. Lesson learnt, remaining cross members came down with slightly more caution, but it’s a good job I intend to get rid of the Laurel and Weigela which have now been drastically pruned.
Six uprights follow, just like felling trees, and the strains of “I’m a lumberjack and I’m OK†can be heard above the roar of the chainsaw. Pity the frame of the new greenhouse was stored so near, but Ted assures me the bends can be straightened out.
Rain stopped play at this point. On his return the farmer looked at the base of the shed and saw the metal post supports sticking out of the concrete.
He’s bringing the angle grinder round tomorrow.
