Title: Onions and Potatoes - Beginner Needs Help
Post by: chuff on March 22, 2006, 16:54:11
Hi everyone ;D
I am nearly ready to plant my first onions and potatoes and I have 1 or 2 questions I would like to ask.
do I water them when I plant them or wait until I see some greenery.
Can I line the potato trench with shredded paper that has been used to print on, or is there a chemical in the ink that is not safe to use, I would like to stay as organic as possible
Should I dig in compost into the onion bed before planting or just topsoil, I read somewhere that if the ground is to rich or something that it will make the onions soft also does the ground need to be firmed
everything is being planted into raised beds which are being filled with shop bought compost and top soil.

First, hello and welcome!

I never water my onions and potatoes as there is normally plenty of water at this time of year!

You say shredded paper, newspaper is ok, but magazines and other inks could be a problem.

I agree with you in that the onions do not like ground that is too rich in terms of fresh compost/manure.

Good luck!
