Title: Spindleberry
Post by: flowerlady on March 22, 2006, 16:10:25
Has anyone ever tried to grown a spindleberry tree?

Last year while walking by the canal I came across a small tree with loads of berries, so I brought a few home!

Do you think they need chitting in the fridge or a soaking and warmth  :-\

Such a gorgeous colour in autumn, just couldn't resist the chance to try grow one, and the birdies love 'em  :D

Apparently it's a member of the Euphorbia family. Certain types are used for medicinal purposes.

Latin name is Euonymous europeaus. Celastraceae family. (Sorry Agapanthus, nothing to do with Euphorbias at all).
To get non- fresh seed to germinate is difficult. So next time you see the fruits, collect the seed and sow straight away and leave outside to get on with it over Winter.

have just found this link:

http://www.pfaf.org/database/plants.php?Euonymus+europaeus

"Stored seed requires 8 - 12 weeks warm followed by 8 - 16 weeks cold stratification and can then be sown in a cold frame."

Think I am in for a long wait!!  :o  oh well, but it IS pretty though!!

Spindleberry bushes are a host plant for blackfly, so watch out if you grow broadbeans nearby!
