I would like to grow some beans up supports this year but don't like string beans. Can anyone recommend any good varieties of green beans for flavour and looks that I could try. Thanks in advance.
I have found climbing french beans Cobra and Blue Lake to be very good.
Rather than green beans, I grow yellow ones - Corona d'oro. Good flavour and easy to see when picking !
This year I will be growing climbing beans from Franchi Seeds of Italy:
Yellow Meraviglia di Venezio - flat podded - fresh
Red marbled Borlotti Lingua di Fuoco and Limon - fresh and dried
Green Fagioni di Spagna - butter beans if you leave them, but I will eat as mangetout early in the season
One year I will try Yard Long Beans - but not this year!
:)
Thanks all. I have now been shopping at Seeds of Italy and have ordered some purple, green and yellow ones as well as a couple of tomatoes and some ruby chard.
Now all I need is for spring to arrive and thaw the ground so I can dig the trenches for the beans and fill them with the compost I've been collecting in readiness. I was going to do this at the end of November but we had unexpected snow storms and have been frozen ever since.
Who was it who didn't believe the weather people's forecast of a hard winter?
