- only 15 seconds of it, & in draft form, but it shows the result of our efforts on the Russian forum - http://www.2gvsap.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1333 - to get the colours exactly right. Quite a task after all these years! It's an extract from a flight sim by a young American soldier.
GO 31 is my aircraft - in whatever squadron, I always flew 'O'. Had 9 of them in all!

Hope all the links work - the last may be a bit slow?
Happy Weekend!!
Good Morning Tim, what i saw and could open looked interesting, what beautiful pictures of your plane in colour. You must have been so excited when you saw the pictures very cleverly done. Mary.
PS
I'm told that there are objections to my story being here. It was here as a natural & topical follow-on from the BST thread.
If thought desirable, I will move it to Profiles - with the stories of everyone else's life - or delete it.
Your wish, my command!
= Tim
Leave it. Some of us may hate war - I know I do - but it's ridiculous to blame every serviceman for what politicians do. Some day I'll post the whole story of our involvement in the Sierra Leone war, and I bet I'll get spammed too.
I, too, would like it left here, but you're sensible, Tim, to ask for the opinions of us all.
:) Lishka x
PLEASE Tim do not remove it , if it was not for you and many others like you we would not have the free speech we have today. So please listen to us your friends ;D.
love, mary. ;D
Leave it here Tim, if it didn't interest so many people it wouldn't be read so much, this is the 2nd time and it's still pulling a crowd.
Tim. I would like to add my wish for this not to be removed. I agree with Mary regarding free speech but there should be a polite way of putting your point of view over. I hope this has not upset you.
Best wishes Lorna
Me too, Tim. This is part of our history and it is amazing to hear it first hand from someone who took part in such momentous events. No one likes war, the loss of life or the destruction it causes but sometimes it can't be avoided and a stand has to be made against truly evil people. My sister has recently been to Auschwitz and witnessed what true evil looks like. busy_lizzie
I agree, Tim leave it here. War is a terrible thing, as you know, and I earnestly hope that neither of my sons ever have to fight in a war. These reminders of the bravery and sacrifices made, do - in my opinion - assist us all to work towards a more peaceful world.
Senile? Just did a long spiel & lost it!!
Gist was - thank you for your support. I'm sorry that the first post caused a flurry. Had I realised, I might not have followed it up with this one.
Trouble is, I see the film as a 'colourful', informative (because the MoD couldn't admit that we were there) & clever clip by a chap who hasn't even flown!
And, to me, in real life, it was a truly wonderful & exciting adventure. And far less bloody than the TV films watched by thousands every night?? And just a small episode in 36 years of Service.
The finale is a little exaggerated, but it is merely me squaring my account, remembering what happened to me the previous year.
One member was unable to open all the links in this new post. They work for me &, surely, they don't need me to be online to work?? Please advise if you have trouble?
Hi Tim. Missed all the hoo har.
When I was at school,I found studying WW2 mind numbingly boring. It was fact.date fact, date etc etc. When I was 16 my Grandpa suddenly started talking about his time in WW1. He got the side of his face blown off...I couldn't see where! Suddenly war became a real experience to me. It wasn't numbers and facts in a book. It was real people and real lives. It dawned on me what people went through during the two wars. Everyday people. The shock and horror became apparent. The funny things came to light too. I read Spike Milligans books, what we going to do..ban them and anybody else who write about their experiences?
I think what you are doing is excellant. I think my son and my daughter will find history easier to study and to understand. Knowing the opinions of the people involved is important,Knowing their experiences is important. I particularly like it these days when you see a documentary which involves people from Germany and Russia for example. You get to see the bigger picture which gives you a more human perspective.
Anyway I still feel pride.
Heldi, I couldn't agree with you more. We had a Japanese teacher stay with us for a whole summer about twenty years ago when the children were little. We continued to write to each other after he returned to Japan and kept in touch over those twenty years until he died a few years ago. We discussed many things over that time, his life and culture, Japanese involvement in the second world war and in particular the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima. He was a lovely man and it was extremely riveting hearing him talk about these things.
Just after the Berlin Wall went down we had a German Teacher to stay and we learnt so much from her too. She was from what was then East Germany so she had many stories to tell us about life behind the Iron Curtain and all the shortages of food etc. Both times our children were involved in the discussions, and I am sure they learnt more from a conversation with them, than they could from a history lesson. busy_lizzie
I don't understand why anyone objects to this thread. :-\
Please leave it there Tim.
I have opened it Tim excellent , glad i did that.
One of the most intresting threads for ages, no way should it be moved, in fact why not post it in every room. It is because of Men and Women like this that gave there lives that we are allowed to read such things today.
Leave it be Tim ..Its good stuff ..99% can't be wrong ...
Where would we have ben digging if it hadn't been for Guys like Yourself ...
Salt mines springs to mind..Cheers ..Jim
First post, be kind.
Tim, I for one want to say, thanks for posting it, and I think it should be left here.
englebert
Yes, this thread must stay. (Please :))
Tim, thanks for this...I for one am in awe of what guys like you did. My dad was a submariner in WW2 and was lucky enough to come out of two of them after being torpedoed, different element from you, but thank the Gods for both of you.
Great good fortune. Went aboard one (Seawolf) in Russia for drinkypoos - closest I ever want to get!!
Don't know whether it has been said on here yet - if I am repeating others then I apologise.
Ozzy has admitted he was wrong the other day. He was having a very bad time for reasons that it is not my place to go into. This, along with it being Paddy's Day (Ozzy is Irish) and the Irish justifiably whupping us English at Rugby, he had also imbibed a large quantity over an extended period of time. He was in the mood for lashing out and lash out he did - the target was irrelevant. He is very sorry and I am sure that he would have posted that himself had he not been (justifiably (and he agrees)) made READ-ONLY.
PS Engy - no hard feelings at the other place mate, so don't feel unwelcome. We can throw just about anything at anybody and we all get over it very very quickly. If you didn't know, I am redimp over there - although some people are convinced I am hiding behind a very convincing nom de plume ;D
Sorry, forgot to post a proper reply to Tim.
Excellent Tim - leave it where it is. Nothing we can do about wars past, especially those that were to defeat fascism. All we can hope to do, is to prevent future wars.

I was in boats too Katynewbie, but thank God, after the war was long gone and done with. Give my regards to your father, now that was bravery.

Since it's my thread, may I second that remark..
'Das Boot' was one of the best films I've seen. Really showed the hell they went through.
Totally agree about the film Tim. In the 70's when I was a wren I was asked to show the public around a sub on one of the Navy Days, got to the bottom of the ladder and went straight back up again!!!! Dad said I was a wimp!! Cant do with small spaces, that probably goes for spitfire cockpits as well...no where to run!!!
;)
Das Boot was a superb film; we could do with less films about people Being Herioic and more about what war really is. I think they've mostly whitewashed WW2.
Love the Wrens, katy - even though my Wife was a 'Gunner'. Dear Cousin was a fitter on Buccaneers - married her pilot!!
