It looks like a male sparrowhawk (much smaller than the female, which is duller in colour) looking truly evil. The only other British bird it could be is a goshawk; the male is about the size of a female sparrowhawk, and optimistic birders often put female sparrowhawks down as male gos. The female gos is a truly awesome sight. That would be grossly unlikely in a garden though!

As Mark says, it is indeed a male SH.  Had his eye on a feasting blackbird :(  (didn't catch it though!) Sad, but that's nature for you, eh? :)
