use a laptop (running on Windows XP), connected to the internet by a cordless broadband connection. We have another pc in house which we'd like to connect to the internet as well using the same cordless unit.
OH has bought a desktop network pci card (10/100BT Ethernet, 32 bit), he's installed the hardware. Then he's inserted the CD and gone through the installation process, but it's prompting him to insert our Windows 98 second edition CD rom disk. We don't have one. We bought the computer new a few years ago and have looked through all the disks given with the computer and the only thing we can find is the recover disk which I dont' think is what is required, when we've inserted this disk it says the installation has been unsuccessful.
How do we get the windows 98 disk, is there a download on the internet somewhere that will give us the files needed for this installation. Can anyone help, please?
If your PC has a recovery disk chances are there was never a Win98 disk as this disc contains win98 setup files
Put your recovery disk in and browse the cd looking for any folder that may contain the win98 setup files. Remember the path of this folder, usually d:\win98 (change d: ito your CD drive letter.
leave the disk in the drive
Install the network card and when prompted for the win98 disk browse to the folder on your recovery CD then choose OK etc and follow the prompts.
hope this helps.
thanks Glow, I'll try that :)
it's working! we ran the system restore disk in the end as it appears that some windows files had been lost over the years. Thanks for the help glow :)
No probs
Just for the record windows will only install a certain amount of files when initially installed. (default installation + installation requested customised files) the rest stays on the CD until required. This is to prevent wasting hard drive space by installing unnecessary software and slowing the PC down.
This is the case with the networking software, during original installation windows wouldn't of detected a network card so wouldn't of bothered loading the software. So had to ask for the disc again when it detected a network card.
Glad to hear you are up and running, BTW you now have the ability with just a few tweaks to share files and printers etc.

As a little of an aside, it was was a sort of unofficial standard to install all the windows 98 setup files in the folder c:\Windows\options\cabs. It is always worth looking to see if such a folder exists when working with windows 98 (which is awful, btw. Get XP if you can). Or sometimes c:\Win98.
Also, if anyone has any problems with XP (or any other Windows, really), I'd be quite happy to try to help. It's what I do for a living.
