Hi, first time for growing runner beans from seed. Planted some around 2 weeks ago not realising how quick they come on. Can't plant these out yet as the frosts are still hitting the south coast. Will try to slow them down in the garage - a bit cooler and darker. The plants are a good 12 inches tall with pairs of leaves at the top.
Can anyone confirm these are as expected in terms of growth, size and shape. I thought they would have been smaller and not so tall. These are Lady Di and another variety from a neighbouring plot owner.
No harm done, as have loads of seeds left!!!
Thanks
TonyM
Blimey you are keen! I won't even think about starting mine off until the 2nd or 3rd week of April and I am in sunny Essex.
In terms of growth, they will easily make 6 foot in no time, and if happy, will just keep on going! If they do get cold suddenly, you will loose them, they really are that tender.
Once again, Oh Dear!!
I was risking it putting mine out last year, as stocky 8" plants, on 8 May - with fleece barrier.
Hate to say this, but I would start again - later? Darkness will only make them softer?
Tony, if you follow tim's advice and plant anew, don't throw away the runner beans you have grown. The sprouts are a delicacy, lightly steamed, stir fried or whatever ... :D
Thanks to all for the advice, only planted them two weeks ago tomorrow but I guess you learn by your mistakes and still have loads of seeds left for round two. I am tempted to keep these going for home growing and start a fresh batch of seedlings for the allotment plot in a few weeks (or more) time. The wife is too attached to these to consider eating them!!
