Title: so proud
Post by: pakaba on March 16, 2006, 06:58:37
I am so proud of my son that I wanted to share this with you.

It is Fair trade fortnight, and  in church on Sunday they were taking about it.  My son, who was  6 in January, said on the way home that he wanted to take in the leaflet he'd been given to show and tell on Tuesday.

We sat down Monday night and i got him to think about what he wanted to say, this is what he came up with, it's only short but then he is only 6,

A lot of farmers who grow  cocoa beans don’t get the money to pay their family for food and the children can’t afford to go to school.  Because other people are greedy and  they don’t pay the farmer enough for his cocoa beans. I don’t think this is fair on the farmer.

FAIR TRADE means that the farmer gets a good price for the cocoa beans   that he grows and he can feed his family and his children can go to school.

You can buy all sorts of fair trade things like, chocolate, biscuits, bananas, coffee and tea.  I’ve brought in some fair trade chocolate for us to try.

I typed it exactly as he said it so it totally came from him, and of course it had to be about chocolate as it's a topic very close to his heart ;D

The teacher was so impressed that she told the headmistress who has asked him to stand up in front of the whole school in assembly and do his show and tell.

I am so proud of him,, not only has he shown that he has a sense of what is morally wrong, he has the courage to stand up and share his feelings.

I could burst with pride.

Reminds me of my daughter; as soon as she was at secondary school, she told the whole school in an assembly all about what she went through when she was caught in the fighting in Sierra Leone in 1997. She's still suffering the after-effects now.

pakaba. Apart from being proud I think that would almost bring a tear to my eye. As a mother of four and grandmother of eight I get very emotional when any of them do or say something out of the ordinary. Thanks for sharing that story. Lovely.

As Lorna's written, it IS out of the ordinary....out of his own experiences and already thinking about world injustices. Can see him going far!

Thanks so much for sharing it and please show him our comments to read, won't you?

well done pakaba's son, you deserve to be very proud :D

a few months ago my son (also 6 years) said to his teacher and the maintenance man at school that the school was doing wrong by allowing all the apple cores, banana peels etc left over from snack time at school to be thrown in the dustbin and that they should be put in the compost bin. They replied that the school doesn't have a compost bin. He came home last week to announce that the school has a nifty new compost bin with a window section so that the children can watch how the compost is broken down. result! :D

Well done both Pakaba and Jesse's son.  It is really encouraging to hear little ones like this thinking things through for themselves.  You should both be very proud.  :) busy_lizzie

Hi
Just catching up as I've been unable to get on line for a few days. :(

Thank you all for your lovely comments ;D ;D.  I am so proud of Ben and he did really well in he assembly 8).

RB Your daughter sounds very brave.

Jesse, what a fantastic son you have.  I read the post to Ben and he reckons he's going to bring it up at his next school council meeting,( he knows all about compsting anyhow) Wouldn't it be great if Ben's school got a composter too based on what your son did ;D

Thanks again
Paula

Have to say i think the parents need a wee bit of praise here too. (thinking of that other thread with the nutter aggressive kid on the PC). At age 6 most kids' responses are down to the influence of their parents. So Pakaba and Jesse congratulations. Yo :) :)u two are doing good.

grawrc. Couldn't agree more.
I have a child.. about 9/10 walking past my bungalow on his way to school. First of all he has shredded all my boundary rope and the terrible language!! As I say to Lorna (jnr) what chance do the kids have with  a Mother like they have who uses the most disgusting language in the street.
