has anyone grown either 'winston' or 'pixie' apples in northerly. cold, wet areas ? - the're both Rhs AGM's and good winter storing varieties but i dont know if they'l do up north.
Any experience of either much appreciated.
Hi,
I've got both in Fife.
Trying to train them as esplaiers on a fence. Winston not doing well - could be a poor plant. Pixie stronger - got mildew last year - not produced any fruit yet. Planted both in 2004 so early days, i hope.
I also put in a James Greive which is doing a lot better - more vigorous growth and fruiting. Kidds Orange Red as a cordon - growing ok but no fruit yet.
All get a lot of wind exposure.
Good luck
Gail
yes thanks for that - fife very wild weather- colder than the west but drier which seems to be pretty critical really. apples in the west get canker from the damp, chosing what variety will work is very hit and miss - discovery seems pretty solid but the apples dont last any length of time
