Hi,
I have just taken on an allotment and was pleased to find this site as I will need all the advice you can give!
I have just bought onion sets and shallot sets. I have been told that one onion set produces one onion and I have to admit I am wondering whether it is worth it. However, is it the same with shallots. The shallot sets I bought look just like shallots so there would seem to be little point in planting them to get any bigger. Do shallots multiply? :)
First welcome to the site cate.
The onion sets are an excellent way to grow onions and work out pretty economical really, since an onion costs about 2p or less.
The shallots produce a head of bulbs as you suspected. Both are useful and comprise part of most peoples planting regime.
Good luck !
Hi Cate
Welcome to A4A. This is a brilliant site, loads of great advice and really friendly users.
I asked the same/similar question back in Feb, and thought you might find it helpful to read the thread.

They look like a popular crop.
