Nobody told me that seed buying was an addiction. I jsut got my plot last April so a lot of my plants cam from other allotment holders and they all turned out well. This year I have bought my own seeds and I just can't stop. I have tomato seeds arriving next week and I already have lots from other poeple on here and ont he freecycle network.
A health warning should be printed on these packets to warn you of the danger. ::)
;D Tee hee I know just what you mean Vez ;D I have a large biscuit tin crammed full of them and can't wait to get sowing, all bought last Autumn at half price 8)
Roll on Spring ;D 8)
My name is Mimi ..............................and I'm an addict too :-[
LOL...welcome Mimi and Roy. We could start our own support group, however as far as addictions go it's better than some. I ahve given up my other addiction for Lent....it's chocolate.
Saddest thing is though...................I havent even got an allotment any more. :-\
Umm, this is hard, but I suppose we need to come out at some point... may I join the addict circle? Luckily my colleagues put up with me, as most of my parcels arrive at work ::)

Vez1,

Just KILL me now!!!! ;D ;D ;D
You might as well ask me to stop breathing ???
Though I am down to 1 bar a week ???
A big one ;D
I am also an A4A, and a seed adict ;D ;D ;D
Roy, a large biscuit tin ... ?
I have FIVE large biscuit tins, perhaps I should seek counselling ... :D
???
The "Salad" box in the bottom of my fridge is full of seeds!!!
Hope no one has any kind of aversion therapy for this...I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
;)
Another seed addict here, am trying vegetables in pots this eyar after being insprired by the container vegetable garden on my GW DVD. Also last nights program was the final push so I went upstairs and decided of about 5 varieites to grow aswell as the ususal Tomatoes and Cut and come again. Dan :-)
p.s- I don't have an allotment either!
Phew its good to know im not alone ;D
At the last count i had just under 2,000 packets of seeds and im running out of hiding places my hubby wont find them in ;D
I need help :'(
I can't say I really have a huge collection of seeds, although I have quite a lot and I understand how it could get really addictive (like A4A) but 2 things hold me back.
One is that I don't know how long they would keep for and the other that even with two plots I don't think I will even be able to use what I've already got.
shocked myself last night when I decided to get seeds out to see what I can think about planting this month - have a carrier bag full and its only my first year. Discovered 3 packets of the same variety of tomato :-\ must STOP ! OH revealed that he doesn't actually like radish .. now that i have 2500 of them, tsk
I'm an addict too. :(
I have one large tin of veg seeds, another of flower seeds. I just can't help swapping seeds.. and also buying them as lots on eBay. :(
(Not seen any on Freecycle yet, unfortunately!)
Melanie
Phew...not alone any more with my addiction. :)
I've had to go buy all new seeds for this year after a disaster with my stash. The new seeds have now been upgraded to a smart new box with dividers so I know which month to sow them all in.
As the box is clear I can also see the pictures on front of the packets & that's enough to get me dreaming of a self-grown lunch.

ok, so I buy a packet of seeds now & then. I'm not hooked, I can handle it, I could stop any time I like.
But I did throw out about 35 packets of seeds last month as they were over 5 years old minimum. I forget I've got half a packet left over form last year and buy some more each spring. Then there are those lovely web sites to order from when I'm having a bad day at work.
OH's dad has started ordering seeds form on-line organic & heritage suppliers so only gets a few seeds each time, I'm moving over to his way of thinking - is it only me that begrudges paying £1.49 for 300 seeds when I only want 50?
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
oh hang the expense ... it's just such fun !!
Throwing seeds away? I noted a fun way to deal with old seeds suggested by supersprout, later in the summer on a patch of cleared ground just broadcast the seeds. At worst nothing will come up, then possibly some green manure, and at best some extra vegetables !
Eep, throw seeds away? Sometimes I go one step further than a prepared bed and just cast them into the breeze and see if anything lands somewhere suitable.. Means I sometimes get surprise plants.. :)
Melanie
And they also don't tell you that once they all start germinating and sprouting, you can't contain the urge to buy and plant more.
Wonder if it's hormonal ;D ;D
Petra; I know that feeling... ::)

This has to be the best thread I have read so far, I thought it was only me that had a fridge full of seeds and am still buying more. I keep sneeking into Garden Centres just to "look" at what they have to offer and keep coming out with more ie today in B & Q I bought a veg seed pack for about £3.50 with 8 different varieties of seeds in them..too good to walk past. I do save the silca gel satchets out of new handbags etc to put in the tin with the seeds to keep them dry in the fridge. I this the best way to store them!!
I'm so glad that I'm not alone in my addiction.........P.S B & Q have reduced first early seed potatoes down to £2 a bag and there were 60 Pentlan Javlins in my bag, what a bargain
LOL Helen
I was offline for a few days but glad to see there are many others in the same boat as me. I have managed to resist buying while I have been in shops the past couple of days but only because I know i have a lovely seed order due within the week. ;D
I said i wasn't going to do it this year!! in my 8by6 foot greenhouse I have
15 types of tomatoes + 10 sorts of veg starting off + 41 types of flowers!!
dosn't look much until you start pricking out :o
I'v got a lottie for the veg but only a small garden so why why did I do it again?
What do you do with all the excess?
Excess? I just keep planting, the lottie seems to swallow it all up ! The shock comes when I start harvesting !
Well I just end up with no available space :'( :'( :'(
Blimey I'm a real novice, only my little cardboard box from Dobies so far :-[. I am certainly addicted though and spent an evening going through all the packets putting dates into a diary. I then realised just what I'd taken on and wondered how I'm going to fit it all in!
Andy
another woolies bargain today (even though I have seeds coming out of my ears) - they've still got the buy one get one free on all plants, bulbs and seeds and my local one stocked up this week so today I got 8 packs of various flower seeds, some dahlias, gladis and crocosmia bulbs for £9 in total (for companion planting of course!) ;D ;D I must stop this!
I keep thinking that I'm controlling those urges then someone throws a name in like "Thomson and Morgan", "Dobies", "Alan Roman", "Poundland" even and I'm off again, cecking out what they have to offer............it's almost uncontrollable. In fact why aren't I in bed now instead of being logged onto here?? :-\
Know exactly what you mean Petra. I've been a bit surprised on the Lidl/Aldi bargain threads no one has mentioned their seeds at 29p per packet or 49p for peas, beans etc - and the range (in Lidl) is much greater than last year. I for one got sidetracked from the great trolley dash to the cloches..........
My greenhouse is full, the windowsills are groaning, the propagator is stuffed to the gills and my poor dining room table (glass) is loaded with trays of pricked out seedlings. Even the top of the kitchen cupboards have dahlias and begonias warming up ::)
MY DH just shakes his head sadly. He even offered to help me take them to the greenhouse. I do not have the heart to tell him theres no space so tomorrow I think I will have to try and erect some kinda temporary shelving in the greenhouse.
And I have not even finished sowing all my seed!!! ;D :-[
