Title: Mulches. help please.
Post by: Val on March 02, 2006, 15:25:38
I haven't enough compost to mulch round the garden this year, so need to buy in. Anyone know where is  the best place to buy from. Canterbury council doesn't know what happens to their collected green waste...after 10 minutes waiting and 3 different calls, it was a I don't know...why do I get the idiots...anyway if we're in for another dry summer I need to put plenty on, so nothing too expensive. Thanks Val.

Hmm, is there somewhere you can collect seaweed for mulch Val? Or spent straw from farms, which would be free if you had transport, or might be delivered for the cost of petrol and a pint if not ... If you were ever heading up the A1 I would gladly give you as many sacks of spent hops as would fit in your boot :)

It's nearly a year since our council promised a pile of wood chippings for our paths  :-\

Well I could get the seaweed from the beach but not enough, and I'd have to rot it down first, no time, its the same with horse manure, I can get it but not well rotted,  I haven't the space or time to compost before the spring, it won't heat up enough.I can't see me peddaling up the A1 on my pushbike  ;)but thanks anyway ;D..looks like its an expensive trip round B&Q's. :'(

I get grass mowings from a commercial grass cutting company. They deliver to someone on the site free of charge (which saves them tip fees. I have also mixed this up with straw from a bale I had to buy in the past, but a single bale goes a long way when mixed with grass clippings and composted down.

It may be worth you phoning a commercial grass cutting company (possibly the smaller one person and a mower sort) and offering to take all their non-treated grass clippings free of charge.

We do the same on our site; they were really upset when they were told they were bringing more dead leaves than we could use, since it saves them the cost of using the Council dump. There's more than enough to mulch the entire site.
