Title: Proud owner of a new arbour
Post by: Jitterbug on March 01, 2006, 15:58:13
Just thought that I would brag about having eventually put up our new arbour.  Got home from a course on Saturday to find DH (who hates gradens and all things green) had been throwing it together and even dug the holes and and sank it.  What a sweetheart :)

Still so much to do - just a pity the weather won't behave itself on the week-ends.  Also this thing called 'work' really does get in the way of our gardening don't you think. ::)

Jitterbug. That looks great I bet you are really pleased. I am glad to see someone was sensible and made sure of a cuppa when working ;D

I've been tempted by those but I think I'd want to put a roof on.

Isn't that going to be just beautiful in the summer? (an it looks good now, too!)...but I note an arch to the left & bean canes to the right....AND your soil looks good too......you're going to have a real get-away-from-it-all, in-the-middle-of-the-happenings type arbour. Jealous as hell ;D - Lishka

ooo, fab!  I would love one as my bench is rotten through and a death trap really.  I am picturing you now, on a balmy summers evening, with a  large ice cold drink in your hand, honeysuckle scenting the air, the birds tweeting, the veggies growing, all's well in the world.....aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

An arbour on my allotment seems pointless as it is purely a working site for me. At home in my garden, there is not really any space in sunny areas, since the garden is not that large.

It would make sense for me as we have barbeques there, and if I put a roof on it would be somewhere to retreat to during a shower.

that looks fantastic jitterbug.  you've obviously got him trained well.

i do agree with you about this work thing.  i've got far too much to do out the back here to spend 8 hours daily wasting my time in the office.  we've had some lovely sunny days this week, but you just know it's going to be pouring by tomorow but i'm so far behind that i must get out there whatever the weather.

thanks for your sharing your pic.  i love seeing everyone else's efforts.  it gives me such inspiration.

;D

Thanks for all the lovely comments

I am really thrilled with it as well.  The reason you can see an arch on the one side and the bean poles on the other is because I really have a tiny garden.  It measures 9m x 9m.  So even though you have a small garden you can still use some imagination and find somewhere to squeeze one in.   I figure even if it is small its my small bit of eden.  I plan to grow golden hop and Clematis Dr Ruppell over the arbour and there will be golden showers roses on the back trellis behind it.  That should make quite a showy statement! ::)

Behind the arch  (over which I am growing Handel roses) and maybe a clematis Josephine is my greenhouse (which came with the house) and behind the beanpoles (for sweet peas) is my paved patio (for barbeque's) and then the sliding glass doors and the house.  It might be a bit small but I am trying to use height for colour as much as possible with climbing/rambling roses and other climbers.  Also trying to build in a bit of winter colour so that next year I am not sitting with a mud pit again.  Using hellebore's, mahonia, dogwood, maybe some snow drops (if I can get enough) and bulbs.  Might just think of putting a clear hard plastic of somekind over the top - thanks for that idea.  I will definitely send some photos later in the year.

We only bought the house late last year so we are busy doing a lot of hard landscaping and the moment - not to mention having dug in tonnes of manure to improve the soil as there was a lot of aggregate in some of the beds.   But I just know it will pay dividends once the plants are in.  I think we are starting to win the battle. :o

As to the cup of tea - that was the only thing keeping me from freezing to death.  ;D But I can assure you in the summer its going to be a long glass of Pymms with some of my own homegrown Borage flowers floating in the top... ;D

Good news that the hard work is paying off J, have mental pic now of breakfast time as you sustain yourself for the day ahead:
Jitters always eats her porage
With a little sprig of borage  ;D

Where will you get your golden hops? I am looking for some to climb up the fence between the road and our lotties, so source info gratefully received  ::)

Hi Supersprout

Not sure yet - it is still on my wish list and I am scouring the nurseries and garden centres like crazy.  Might become available once they start shooting later in the Spring - as I suppose not much to sell at the moment :-\  Will let you know once I source.
