Title: Melons (Passport F1)
Post by: Common_Clay on February 28, 2006, 14:11:05
Has anyone had any success of growing these outside under cloches/cold frames?

Had some seedlings grow OK last year in the greenhouse. About 3 melons per plant. Very sweet much better than the shop bought fruit but we did eat them within 10 minutes of picking!

Trying the same variety as you from seed this year

Hi glow777, thanks a lot, looks like they might be ok then. Unless it was a heated greenhouse...

I'll try to grow quite a few if they're that good. ;D

Mine were going to be canteloup Sweetheart but tho they started off great and everything looked promising they didn't get big enough to eat - they were outside in coldframe and mini g'house. Think I left too many on plant trying to be cautious.  But hey ho will try again this year ........

Thanks everyone... I think I'm probably being far too ambitious, what with everything else I'm going to try growing, but should be interesting if nothing else.

Wicker, my packet says to limit the plant to just 2-3 melons (looks like lots of plants!) by pinching out new shoots after they have formed 3-5 true leaves, if that helps.

:) :)

Yep, CC, my packet said that too - but I was being greedy/over cautious I'm afraid - always afraid I'll lose the lot.....
