Not a nice question but... I've had some poorly kids over the half term and unfortunately there has been an awful lot of sickness. I can't get the smell out of my rug. It's disgusting. Does anyone know how to get rid of this smell or will it have to be professionally cleaned? It's a wool shagpile type thing.
soz to hear about your kids Heldi :( hope they are recovered you could sprinkle bi carb on it as its supposed to absorb smells worth a go and wont cost much
Yes, totally agree with flower.....I always used bicarb for 'this sort of incident' when my children were small or if animals/pets 'mess' anywhere accidentally....works the same...

As I've mentioned before on another thread....you can also use the bicarb diluted in water to soak your jam-jars & lids especially, to get rid of strong smells i.e. onions, pickles etc. before using them for jams.

Aw!! Sorry to hear your little ones have been poorly Heldi. Hope they are all better now. Apart from the Febrize type products, we have started to use this product that we got for our cat. She went through a phase a while back of soiling one of our rugs, so I asked at the Pet Shop in the Grainger Market in Newcastle and they suggested the below product. My OH has just said to me, "you not half photo the weirdest things". ;D busy_lizzie
I was going to suggest bi-carb, but then saw B-L's pic........as it gets rid of the smells of all sorts of disgusting things, certainly worth trying (wonder if the active ingredient is bi-carb> ;D).
I used to have a large all-wool shaggy rug - bought it in Greece - Flokati or something? - at one time the cat used to delight in rushing outside, eat grass, then puke over it. Nice ::) Cos it was all wool, took it to the laundrette where they have big machines & put it on a gentle (but thorough!) wash. Think, tho, that it was summer, so was able to dry it outdoors, not an option at present.....

when my 2 are sick i wash carpet with my machine then sprincle a bicarb and lavender mix on it leave over night then hoover in the morning half and half works a treat and smelld nice for a few days too ;D
Right, I'll have a go with busy lizzie's on the rear seat of our car which had a pint of cream over it. I see it's American - but presumably available over here?
Sickness? - sympathies - the grandchildren have just got over it. Many schools were closed because of it.
( A different reason - I see today that a school burns down every 5 days!!)
I use a different brand, but basically the same animal product from the vets to clear up after visiting teenage lads(!) ::) It works really well but it's not cheap...cheaper than professional carpet cleaning anyway!! Also good for spraying around the carpet around the base of the loo just to keep it hygenic . Works on any natural odours and stains. Pleasant scent too. ;)
Oh dear Heldi - another one who has had the dreaded bug. I ALWAYS use bicarb. Get the cheapest one from the chemist and then be quite heavy handed with it. Had the same problem with a car seat - yep, the worst thing it could happen to I reckon! I had to do it twice and the second time I left it on overnight and then just vacuumed it off and the car smells fine now. Good luck ;D
Bi-carb. Another use. My old Mum told me about (she had nine of us) at the first sign of nappy rash put teaspoon of bi-carb in baby's bathwater.. I did this with all four of my kids.

Sorry to hear about the sickness - hope the above works for you, there's nothing worse that that lingering smell.
As we are onto Bicarb uses - a little in the bath helps sooth chicken pox as well as nappy rash! Just in case...... :-\

Kids are fine now. The little one was poorly most of the week,my son was poorly overnight (4am onwards :( ) but was recovered by lunchtime on Sat and was eating sausage rolls ::) . Me, I was poorly all weekend,I'm fine now. I just get really cross when I feel poorly...waste of time and all that. OH has escaped it...so far. Thankyou all for your best wishes.

Oh gosh we all had it too, but of course me the worst! :( Hope you have all gotten over it, and bicarb is WONDERFUL stuff, have an open small pot in my fridge to remove "odours" :o
For chickenpox I can highly recommend letting them put their own calamine on their spots, requires concentration and diverts em for a while!!
Me and OH had it too, dont know where we picked it up (no children around). At first I thought I had poisoned OH with my cooking until I took ill 2 days later..... We didn't need bi-carb but its good stuff for acid indigestion and heartburn as well.

Carol, the thought that I had poisoned my family crept into my mind but OH ate the same stuff and has been alright. Then my friend said her kids had it too and I definately haven't fed them!
Thanks again everyone for your help. Didn't have bi carb in the cupboard so went out to get some and came back with two bags of compost,five hen candles,an egg cup with a chicken on it, a caramac and all via a chat with my son's school teacher and a visit to an Italian restaurant care of my Mum !
