Title: The Greening of the Potato.
Post by: tim on February 27, 2006, 08:48:56
Why, pray, do shop tubers go green in the light in a week or two, whereas my seed have not done so in 2 months? Is it because of the soil on them??

My, spooky  ::)  I was only wondering about this yesterday...  Anything to do with sprouting potatoes put their energy and chlorophyy productin into the sprouts rather than the potato itself???  Does chitting release any chemicals which stop potato greening to protect and feed the shoots?

I have seen somewhere on the internet that soil on potatoes will help protect against greening when dug in the field.. not sure about when chitting though (and most of mine have no soil on)

Good question Tim ;)

I read an article recently (blessed if I can find it now though!) on some research done in order to study the effect of altering the genetic make-up to reduce the likelihood of greening in potatoes, so as to reduce the glycoalkaloid levels.
As I recall, they noticed that greening is prompted by a number of features, including the way that the metabolism of the potato changes, and that not only light, but heat, and the stage in the lifecycle of the tuber played a role.
Also though, and I didn't know this, evidently some varieties of potato green more quickly than others.

there you are, Tim.......you ask a question here & Jenny (or John Miller when he's around) will always come up with the bizz. (why can't we have a thumbs-up emoticon?)  Anyway, thumbs up to Jenny for the reply.

Argh! blushing here a bit now Tim and Alishka - but no way would I be so bold as to assume that I have the level of knowledge that John and the rest of you have....
I just like to keep up with the latest research, that's all - love reading.  And yes, RC,  the article was about GM crops - I figure that I want to know what they're getting up to! (Can't see your pics though?)
