Title: Look - no hands, mama!
Post by: tim on February 25, 2006, 16:39:23
I know that it's not a Chaffinch, but why is it that Chaffinchs make like a Hummingbird - pecking a fat cake while airborne - when they know that they are perfectly capable of landing on it?

I don't think that the birds have read the books about their supposed characteristics ... my chaffinches, unlike yours, are almost entirely ground feeders (had 7 today, hopping about, all on the ground - think that's a record!).  My robin, however, does the hummingbird act & persistently refuses to feed on the ground.  My blackbirds wrap themselves around the seed feeder and feed hanging in the prunus - also not on the ground.

The starlings feed anywhere - hanging upside down from the fatball, swinging on the seed feeder, on the lawn, on the patio - you name it, they'll eat there  ::)
