Post by: Hyacinth on February 24, 2006, 11:45:04
When potted on, can they be buried up to their 1st true leaves/and/or seed leaves, like toms, please?

Hi Alishka,  hope you are well.

As to Cu seedlings,I try NOT to subject the stem to any unnecessary moisture as they Very easily rot off.

I usually sow two to a 3" pot and discard the weaker one allowing the remaining one to develope a nice root ball b4 transplanting.

Hope this helps regards...Alan

ive read that you should sow in a pot half full, and fill up the pot as the plant grows.

Isnt it quite a job to stop cucumbers becoming leggy, hence the reason for doing this ?

Certainly mine are all legs and no body! even tho they were planted at the correct depth......I'll try earthing up, keep on the dry side & see what happens - space in the pot,  so no root disturbance. Only the 2nd time I've grown cucumbers, so learning.

Hi
cos they get so leggy,I don't sow mine till April, then as soon as they germinate I put them in the g/house during the day and bring them in at night. If you have no g/house do the Geoff Hamilton trick with the wooden  box and cover it with polythene,or a seed tray with perspex cover. As long as they get a few hours good top light they should not get too leggy.  good luck....Alan

Alan, many thanks - you're a star! If I can still sow in April, I'll play around with these now, still knowing that April's not too late to sow & bring on. As I've written, this is only my 2nd yr at cucs, so still new. To explain, tho..usually I start off toms, courgettes & chillis mid-march......this year I'm going to not be around (poss) for most of march, so thought if I could get them grown to a sturdy decent size & potted on, I could off-load the lot onto a friend to caretake, & certainly can't do that with seedlings. So a bit of experimentation going on, here ::).....cheers! Lish
