Title: apple tree planting tips please
Post by: adrianhumph on February 24, 2006, 09:07:07
Hi all,  :D
Ok, dashed down to aldi`s, got some apple trees, now how about your best tips for planting them, for example, should the stake be vertical or at an angle ??? Do you use compost in the hole or not ???  Any tips gratefully received.

                                                                                 Adrian.

OK, dig a hole about 2 foot deep and twice the size of the root ball/roots. Loosen the soil in the base and sides of the hole and place the tree into the hole. Spread the roots out so then are not cramped or squashed.

Make sure the depth of the tree is correct, the union when the root stock is grafted onto the head stock needs to be at least 2” above soil level to prevent roots emerging from the head stock section.

Start to refill the hole making sure you do not leave any air holes. Firm down the soil as you go. I do not add any fertilizer as it may burn the fibrous roots.

When the hole is full make sure all is very firm, treading it in if required and then water very well. For the first summer you will need to water a number of times as the roots establish.

For staking I prefer a stake at an angle if you have the space. This is a more secure method and will hold the tree stable even in windy sites. Make sure the method of tying to the stake allows for growth and does not rub on the tree. You can get simple “rubber” ties that are designed for the job or a pair of old tights is not bad.

Oh, and protect the trunk from rabbits, they love the soft bark of new trees.

Cheers for that Jerry. Nothing to fear from present frosts?

Unless it is forecast to be very cold for more than a day or two then they should be fine.

Jerry, is that the same for all fruit trees? Pears, cherry, etc?
