I am trying to design a simple website (so don't think I need to pay for someone to design it for me).
I have an FTP programme to transfer the pages to my web domain and also have web hosting.
I just need to find a package to design a simple site with about 5-6 pages linked to a front page. Preferably free shareware. I want to be able to save the finished pages and retain ownership (rather than have to use another web hosting site).
Has anyone done this and can you point me in the right direction?
I would be so grateful. Thanks in advance.
Steve,
I've never used this myself, but know a man who has,
http://www.tucows.com/preview/421443
it is apparently very easy to use, and should produce what you want.
Let me know how you get on, or if you need any more help.
Cheers
Dan
Thanks Dan. I will check it out and let you know how it goes.
Cheers again
Steve
ive got fairly good at the old designing just by playing with frontpage and also going on sites and clicking the edit button at the top and seeing how they have done certain things.
i think i will also look into the link from Dan as i need to do some complicated stuff eventually for a site. so that could be of use.
But i advise playing!! tis always fun.
if you havnt aklready got a webhost try www.50webs.com its free and you upload using FTP. banner and pop-upless too. you will get a subdomain like www.lordsteve.50webs.com etc etc.
Lord Steve
if you get stuck or you need some advice i am a trainee web designer and i would gladly make a site for you for free or if you need a helping hand just ask i will be happy to help check out the link dan gave or look at frontpage
if you have no joy with them or would just like me to do it for you pm
Hi Lord Steve,
Not sure about the hosting question you have, but as far as designing a simple website of a few pages there's always Netscape Composer, which is free and comes as part of the normal Netscape browser.
Did a short course with the Open University and this was the program we used. Possibly not the one to go for though if you're after flashy design.
Hope this helps. :)
Thanks for the advice and offers of help (that was really kind of you, marfleet, and good luck with your designing). I have been tinkering away for the past few days and have created my first website!! Woohoo!!
Web Builder worked like a dream, Dan. I have been busy transferring my pages to and from the web domain as I keep changing my mind about how it should look. It is only a basic site, but it will do the trick! I made a few 'trial and error' type mistakes - most of the time was spent getting the layout, fonts and formatting correct. Definitely a painstaking process.
These are the steps I went through: 1) Buy domain, 2) Create and 'publish' web pages on Web Builder, 3) Transfer them to the domain (I used WS_FTP but you can upload directly from Web Builder I think). It has been great fun and a good learning curve! In time, I suppose I will want to add some cleverer features ...but it will do for now!
Thanks again!!
Steve,
Glad web builder worked for you.
I new nothing about web sites before setting up A4A, and don't know alto more now ;D
It is supprising what can be done with a little knowledge !!!
Cheers
Dan
