Title: Spaghetti Squash
Post by: pakaba on February 20, 2006, 21:15:30
Hi
Does anyone know where i can get some spaghetti squash seeds from.?  The only place i have found online that has them is Mr Fothergills and they have sold out.  I've tried Suttons, T&M, Marshalls, Johnsons.

Many thanks

Has anyone actually grown a spaghetti squash? I'm interested but worried it might taste bland... Is it actually tasty eaten like spaghetti? ???

Can a squash really taste anything but bland? Does pasta taste hugely exciting wihout garlic, pesto, herbs & lots of butter?

We grow it every year.

Yes, I have grown and eaten it regularly whenever I have had an allotment, but not for several years now. Unlike winter squash, it's not the sweet/nutty/thick kind; more like a courgette flavour.

I wouldn't say it's bland, like a courgette isn't bland. Spag squash has a delicate flavour there either to enjoy in its own right, or that will absorb the butter, pasta sauce, black pepper etc. In some ways I think it's enjoyable like some Oriental ingredients for texture and 'mouth feel'  :P.

New varieties have sought to improve the flavour and sweetness, and I'm going to grow it again this year now I have a plot again. You could always grow one plant and see if you like it. If you want a handful of seeds, pm me!

Is there a 'viable til' date on the pack?
Money saving tip: even if they are over the viable date, you could plant more than you think you need in modules and 'see what comes up'  ;D

Supersprout, that is a Spag Squash. They're original from New Zealand. Grow very well in here. I've picked more than 20 squashes from one plant. I perfer when they're get to around 6-10 lbs size. They can grew to 20lbs easy. But I don't like it because I don't want to eating that squash for 2 /3weeks. Can't finished it all, always given half away!

Thanks for all the tips on where we can get seeds.  I can't wait to taste it, especially with garlic, pesto, butter...what else did you say Tim??? sounded delicious, (haven't had tea yet so am hungry  ::))

BUT is it just like spaghetti, could you replace spagehitti with it if you were cutting down on carbs?? (eg slimming world red days)

Yes, yes, yes!
Weight watchers = zero Points.
Slimming world = unlimited on red day (like courgette)
Substitute for pasta in low-carb regimes.

Tora!

Warning on the Mixed squash from Seeds of Italy - they are all named varieties BUT they are all mixed up in one packet so you've no idea which is which and its pot luck what you're growing. One of mine turned out to be a giant pumpkin  :o not what I would have chosen but small grandson was delighted.  ;D ;D I got over 120 seeds in the packet though so there must have been some spaghetti squash in there somewhere - didn't find it last year, perhaps more luck this time!

120 seeds!  :o I wonder if there is any way I can tell which seed is which... maybe not! :(
What else did you grow from the packet and did you like them?

They list 10 different varieties, and they are always generous with their seeds!

Last year was a poor year for me squash wise - very few, but what did grow were big - but not as big as the pumpkin.

How can this round, solid looking vegetable be like spaghetti? Do you have to cut it into thin strips or is it obvious when you cut it open ?

It comes apart into sort of wormy bits. I just cut in into chunks and cook it like marrow or courgette; I don't like courgette much and find this one better.

Well - that's persuaded me then! A friend very kindly gave me some seeds, and with that description, I am sure now the kids will eat it  ;D (They don't believe that pasta spaghetti is worms any more...)

I grew spag squash for the first time last year because curiosity overcame me.   I can say it was lovely.   I used it in meals as a potato/pasta replacement.

To cook the spag squash I cut it in two to retain the seeds before wrapping each half tightly in foil.   I then roasted the squash for approx 1 hr to hour and half.   To service I just pulled the flesh away from the skin.   The cooked flesh pulls away from the skins in long thin ribbons like vermacilli, hence the name spaghetti squash.

I too am looking for some more spag seeds as I've had a catastrophe with my seed box & they've all spoiled.   Fortunately Wilko's have a BOGOF on their own brand and Johnson brand of seeds.   The only seeds I couldn't get are spag squash and curly kale

Good luck with your spag squash, hope you have as much success with yours as I had with mine last year.

Hi
I am very excited as i just bought a spaghetti squash from sainsburys. It was very naughty of me because we get a vegie box each week and are trying to eat in season. BUT i just could not resisit it.  I didn't even look to see which country it came from, it just fell straight into the trolley and then refused to be taken out ;D

I am going to have it for my dinner tommorrow, so i am trying(and failing) to stick to the dreaded slimming world, any cooking tips from anyone in the know.

How was it? What did you do with it?
I'm gonna have to try it in fact I almost came away from sainbury's with one the other day but had too much to carry home already.
Have just started a diet so I will defo give it a go and if it's nice will look to grow this year.

Are you going to save the seeds from your spag squash before you cook it.   You may then be able to grow your own instead of being "mugged" by sainsbury's.
