Title: Damson tree
Post by: Dadnlad on February 20, 2006, 15:27:34
Have been thinking of planting a damson tree on the plot

There seem to be 3 main varieties listed by nurseries:
Merryweather
Farleigh
Shropshire

Does anyone have growing/ taste preferences ?

We already have a fan-trained plum & there are wild gages in the next field, so no pollination probs

Anyone know of good/cheap suppliers ?

Good but not cheap supplier:  Ken Muir ( www.kenmuir.co.uk )  I've not bought a damson tree, but for apple trees, soft fruit bushes, and strawberries I've never bought a dud from them.

Given the long lead times from planting to fruiting, the extra few quid is worth it for a guaranteed product, I think.

I purchased a Damson (Merryweather variety) in my local Morrisons Supermarket on Saturday for £4.99.  Think its about a three year old.  Appears very healthy and height of about 4 ft.
They also had two varieties of plum, greengage, apples (on M26 rootstock - Bramley, Sunset and a Laxtons) and ornamental trees (flowering cherries, dark leaved ornamental plum and others) same size and price.

Nipped in on me dinner and picked up a Czar plum & a Morello cherry for a tenner the pair - result  ;D

Then the missus reminded me I went in for a damson

So still looking    ::)

My damson is Shropshire Prune, and is a really heavy cropper, with a good taste, I would recommend it.
