Title: how far apart do you sow your broad beens?
Post by: blight on February 12, 2006, 17:26:00
broad beens being an alien crop in my parts, i know little or nothing about the  proper way of cultivating them. but i have always grown them because i like them so much. i sow mine 10 cm apart and 30 cm between the rows.
i found  that the outer rows crop better than the ones in the center of a bed.
should one sow them therefor in single or double rows only? and space them further apart?

I grow mine in a block nine inches apart. I tried closer and didn't get such good results.

About 6" apart in the row, and about 18" between rows.

I sow in pots  but plant 9" apart with 12" for double rows and 2 ft between sets of rows.

I like to plant out the plants in rich soil. I use a double row. I plant them 7 inches apart and 9 inches between the rows. This year I might plant them 8 inches apart as I have a new hoe and that is 7 inches wide  :)

Depends on which broadies ... I have sown staggered 6 inches apart over half a bed (2 m) without interruption, with dwarf broadies (Sutton). Very successful. I quite like the uneven performance, so I get beans over a long period (I eat them as mangetout) instead of all coming at once.
Aquadulce Claudia are sown in two staggered rows 6 inches apart, along the outer edge of each bed, and staked along the row cos they are tall.
Amazing how different we all do it, great question!! ::)
