Last year I had a bed full of healthy strawberries which fruited
really well, except the slugs ate most of them >:(
Is there a tried and tested way of growing strawberries which will
not get munched by the slimey creatures?
Does anyone suspend them to avoid this problem?

I don't do this myself, but many of the Pick Your Own farms round my way do. They grow them on a table top system, that is in troughs suspended an a framework at table height. Stops the slugs getting at them, makes them easy to pick, but you have to drip irrigate and fertilise them.
Some strawberry varieties have the berries held on strong stalks above the leaves, this helps.
