Title: Sowing veg outdoors
Post by: tim on February 12, 2006, 09:26:32
Temperature for sowing was mentioned under 'onion sets'.

It cannot harm to stress that, once again, Patience can be profitable. 'Seed sown later, in good conditions, will usually overtake that sown earlier in poor condtions'.

Typically, 7C is the rule. And rather that employing the numbum technique, just pay a few pence for a soil thermometer?

PS I note that clear plastic - rather than black - is recommended for warming the soil.

...but will encourage weed growth? So, on a large plot, might be better to stick with the black?

PS Tim........we read the same Gardening Section, obv ;D - but the second thought was all mine :)

1. Weeds? Yes, agreed - but on, say, a raised bed, easily dealt with? And you can see them happening.

2. Telegraph? Well, you'll note that the temp was all mine!!

A good tip to sowing seeds outdoors is to wait until the weed seedlings start to grow. Then you know if it warm enough for them it is warm enough for your flower and veg seed.
