oh no! the day has finally arrived (which I have had circled on my calendar for weeks) - lunch packed, tools charged up, wood/screws bought etc for my OH to come with me to the lottie to build the raised beds - only problem is it's bleedin P***sing it down (thought we had a drought in Kent)! so now all the wood is wet and no way we can go! calendar is so full over the next few weeks it's going to be the at least the middle of MARCH before we can spend a whole day there - arrgghhh!!! I was so looking forward to today, it felt like it would be the real start of the growing year.
ho hum - back to bleedin work then
ps - sorry for the moan, it's 7.30 on Sunday morning, I'm the only person logged into the site and just had to get that off my chest x
Hi dirty one,
:( commiserations for your situation. It seems there`s nothing you can do except wait it out. Its raining here too but I `ll be doing what I call "shed-work" Maybe the weather will improve by lunchtime you never know.
Best of luck, Col
I understand your frustrations - I too was hoping for some long hours at the plot today and this week (as it's half-term and I'm off work) but have woken to the rain and more is forecast for the coming days. (I know we need it but..... :-\ ).
Perhaps we should consol ourselves with the thought of evenings getting lighter and might be able to get there for an hour or so soon.
Lucky you with your wood all ready - I've yet to source any.
Have a good day regardless.
Yep, especially when you have got all your ducks and OH in a row for a serious date with the plot, horrid to have it rained off, grrr. I got so frustrated I planted loads of peas indoors last week and am eating the sprouts now. The poor little things will never see a deep bed or a full growing season :'( :'( but at least there's a crop to stave off the itchy finger syndrome for now :-\. Sprouts for Sanity at the moment ;D
Raining here too ::) And I'll be doing 'shed work' as well ... which means I will be sitting in the shed doing s*d all 8)
Haven't got a lottie, but had great plans for the garden today - and it's tipping it down here too >:( Never mind, we do need it so shouldn't grumble :-\ :)
I put some thought into the weather this year, and so far haven't done anything indoors as all those jobs are being saved for rainy days. I've also got some beds covered and dry for digging when the rest of the ground is too wet. Unfortunately that means the weather is never an excuse to take a day off. Today I shall be working on the bog garden and rockery around the pond, so even rain isn't really an excuse.
Eating your seedlings Supersprout, :o :D
My Greenhouse is my escape route for wet weather, due to continued run of clement conditions, it is rather neglected at the moment, but there is no point in grumbling, the outdoors work has priority anyway.
Wrenched a muscle in my back on Friday, so digging my new bean trench is out, anyway :(.....looking at the rain in Brum, tho, do wish I'd had the foresight to cover the area with plastic - gonna be difficult/impossible? to riddle wet clay now. :-\
So, trip to Wilko's and Poundland for me, followed by an afternoon sowing seeds before putting them cosily on their new electric blanket.
Dirty, hope that the rain clears for you and that you can still get to the lottie & the new raised beds. Fingers crossed x
Not raining in Antwerp but it's not looking too promising and I'm hoping to get down there and do a lot. No decent garden places or DIY shops open here on a Sunday, boy do they miss out on the weekend home/garden workers.
what a great site - you've cheered me up - I knew you'd understand my lottie obsession and disappointment at not getting out there!
have decided to sow as many seeds as I can on the kitchen table instead and OH (he's not so bad after all) has offered to take a days leave from work as soon as it's dry to get the beds made
and of course we do need the rain
so onwards and upwards and thanks everyone xx
hey DF, you could always go down to your local gardencenter, look at the prices for new gutterpipe, and water butts to go onto your shed, and greenhouse, check out the seeds and plant for growing during the year, buy some netting to stop the birds, get loads of Blood /fish and bone, for the plants, A pH soil testing kit, clean and sharpen any tools, lawnmower, pots & seed trays, which will save time when the weather get hot,
But most of all we need the rain, try to use it to your advantage,
hope this picks up your felling
windy
PS its P*****G IT DOWN HERE NOW --- thanks-- now im feed up
LOL LOL DOH :'( >:( ;D ;D
I've been putting off sorting my greenhouse out until a rainy day although I've been itching to get on with it. So today it's raining, but my dog had to be operated on, on tuesday and can't be left alone in case she runs around or pulls at the stitches. So we are both confined to the house while my OH is down the garden centre. There's no justice.

Has been raining here over night. Looks like the whole country had/got rain today. It is a day pottering in the house for me unless it dries up, but might get my lottie planning book out and review when the great seed planting is going to start.
I am still looking for Poundland for all those bargains. I have come across Pound Zone and Pound World, but as yet haven't managed to track down Poundland. ;D busy_lizzie
with so much to do (and more besides) I shouldn't really be sitting at the computer
'talking' to you lot!!! ;D
Hi all, I`m home.
Shed work - I`ve had a couple of hours mostly sorting out my seeds that live in a muddled collection of coffee tins - at least now they`re labelled. The mice have chewed on the polystyrene trays that help keep my potting shed lettuce warm, and poked about with the seedlings. There`s no way I can chit spuds in there they`ll eat them all.
A good thing today is that I walked to the allotment as otherwise I`d just get a wet saddle and I came across the bike frame parts I want to make a new improved trailer hitch so that will give me a wet weather construction project.
Its still raining, I`m still cold and damp but I`m glad I went out to the plot for a while.
Col
Didn't you guess that would just happen with halft term. I work right opposite my lottie and I walk by in the mornings gazing lovingly wishing I was going there instead of work and now of course it is raining. Oh what a surprise. Mind you I have come to pick the daughter up so she will be home for a few days so that makes up for it.
I'm glad i went up the lottie yesterday it was sunny all day, its raining here today aswell. Got some shallots and broad beans in plus done a lot of tidying up.
Still, with the fear of sounding like an old fart, we did need the rain...plus i'm off to see my nephew in Baldock so its worked out well for me.
Sorry folks, but I'm delighted!
I was so worried about the lack of rainfall and the sorry state of the plants that I had planned to go out today with the hose and give everything a good soaking before putting on a half decent mulch.
BUT! - the Rain Fairy arrived last night and has decided to stay a while, so I can stay indoors and propagate to my heart's content (oooh, Matron!)
I was also planning to wash the car so - double joy!
;D ;D
Rained all day here too but guess it's really badly needed and the garden/lottie will be happier in the long run. Especially the Couch which is probably spreading its roots in glee as I type :(
Lishka - hope your back gets better soon. Don't be tempted to overdo it in the meanwhile!
Ahhh, sorry about the rain! I'm a Kent'un so experienced rain too! Chin up chuck- worse things happen at sea! Dan :-)
Sunday was the only day I had free this week and it rained in Cheshire - but it was warm rain, soooo washed the car ( rain helps ease of the dirt), checked out the new hedge ( which needed the rain), Scrubbed down the back yard and bench with algae remover ( which said wet surface first) moved a couple of clematis ( less shock in the rain?), and generally got unbelievable filthy.
Then came indoors with a big grin on my face & got tarted up to go out for the evening.
Now I'm back at work, It's drying out again. Ha flippin ha. (and I've got a heap of wet muddly clothes to deal with later.
It was raining here on Sunday too. I ended up going swimming with the kids. Had hoped to start digging on the other side of the path at the lotty but it was too wet. The other side will have to wait a bit longer. Not looking forward to it as it is full of couch grass. I keep telling myself that all that digging will do my bum some good...I try to ignore what it does to my back. :D
mmm I agree with the fed up sentiments.
Had Friday off work. Looked at forecast (BBC - when will I learn?) It said sunny all weekend. So I did house stuff all day Friday, made and half-dug the last raised bed on Saturday and woke up Sunday to rain. First comment: OH B****R it's RAINING followed three seconds later by OH GOOD WE NEED IT! (Third comment was that my ordered rain gauge hadn't arrived so I wouldn't be able to see how much we'd had!)
Still miffed - if the Beeb had been more accurate I'd have spent Friday and Saturday beavering and Sunday defrosting the freezers. (Even though it would have been harder as I couldn't have put the food outside to keep cold).

I went to do some digging, it bucketed down, and I got spectacularly covered in mud. Then guess what, someone from the Birmingham Post phoned to say he wanted to come and take my picture. Si it looks like I'll be immortalised as the mud-man.
Hey Robert you'll have to post the photo up!
in the end on Sunday I sowed (sewed?) 80 tomato plants (40 marmande and 40 alicante) and 40 radish in modules, 3 pots of celery for the window sill and a big pot of carrots (which I'm leaving in the greenhouse as an experiment) and guess what - today, 3 days later, there are 4 radishes poking up their first leaves!!
spring is definitely in the air
btw - I don't even like radishes but the seeds were there and you know how it is
radish in MODULES df! :o :o :o
Good luck with the marmandes, yum 8)
