Walking around my frozen wilderness this morning, my thoughts wandered to warmer Summer months and what to do with the rather sorry looking patch of ancient Red Currants and Black Currants occupying a priime position on my allotment. I intend to dig them up and replace with Raspberry canes and a Strawberry patch.
I'm sure there must be existing threads but can anyone offer advice on which varieties to grow for TASTE. Huge crops don't interest me as we have a prfusion of PYO farms around this part of Somerset. Everything I am growing on my new allotment has to meet my primary directive. Taste and taste only.
Last year I bought some 'Alice' strawberries, fantastic taste, ;D quite a new variety I believe but well worht the search :)
alpine strawberries great taste and i find them bug and bird free , instead of being free to them ?
raspberries: i find that summer fruiting ones are better flavoured than late croppers.
I have some Royal Sovereign strawberry plants which I had for 20 years. I take new plants as runners every 3 years. No other strawberries taste to me as good. I do not know where you can buy them but if you find someone who has some perhaps they will give you some runners .
Alpine strawberries get my vote too.
I find the Autumn Rasps better than the summer,hey ho. It's probably all down to the site, the summer ones are in the garden and the autumn at the allotment. I grow Cambridge Favorite strawbs -it's not supposed to be the best flavoured- but I like it a lot better than the more modern varieties I've planted. Always wanted to try Royal Sovreign though -Ken Muir does them.
