this has to be the daftest question on the site but bear with me please what months are spring in same question for the other seasons my little girl asked and i cant remember ??? and told her id have to ask the magic computer thanks for any responses id be very gratefull
i would say march april may SPRING
june july august SUMMER
september october november AUTUMN
december january february WINTER
These vasry slightly depending on your area of the country
and with global warming they are no longer distinct!!
It's not a daft question, it is quite an interesting one. People often make two assumptions - that seasons begin on the first of the month, and that all the seasons are of the same length. The first certainly is not justified, and the second is open to debate.
I would say that spring starts in late March - isn't March 21 the traditional date? Summer starts around the beginning of June, autumn starts in mid September and winter in... Well, I don't know: the beginning of December, maybe?
Of course with global warming that is all in the process of changing...
I don't know about in other areas of the country, but here in Herefordshire, spring starts around march time, summer in june, and autumn in early october, running through until late feb.
We don't really get a winter as such - certainly not compared to what I remember growing up in the late 70's and early 80's. It seems as though all we get these days is a prolonged autumn - even if it does snow, it hasn't lasted for more than 24 hrs for years round here!
We are also in a drought - the river wye is at midsummer low - you could probably wade across in wellies and not get wet - it rained properly ( as opposed to drizzling) the first time last night for almost a month!
I would go with Chrispea in terms of the traditional timing of the seasons, but there's loads of variation as to when the signs of the seasons appear, eg crocuses + daffodils for spring, leaves going brown for autumn.
thank you all so much my little girl will be happy now she knows thank you once againe from loulou :D
valentinelow is right, spring is when the spring equinox happens, around 21st-22nd march, when the sun heads north of the equator, autumn is when it crosses south of the equator. summer is the 1 1/2 months up to and after summer solstice usually 21st of june, when the sun is overhead at noon on the tropic of Cancer. Winter 6 weeks either side of Dec 21st, when the sun is overhead on the tropic of Capricorn.
Of course this does not allow for the fluctuations in climate, sea currents, the Artic loop, which is why we are having a dryish winter. etc etc. but as a rough guide is seems to work.
I always thought that the first day of spring is 21st March, summer 21st June, autumn 21st September and winter 21st December.

Officially this is exactly how it is, the equinox govern the start of spring and autumn and the solstices govern the start of summer and winter. Though for gardeners it is better to take your local climate into account and decide your own seasons.
all my books (from old war time ones to present day) seem to agree with the following:
Mar = early spr
Apr= mid spr
May = late spr
Jun = early summer
Jul = mid sum
Aug = late sum
Sep = early aut
Oct = mid aut
Nov = late aut
Dec = early wint
Jan = mid wint
Feb = late wint
obviously weather conditions can dictate things more than the above dates...

With what is happening with the weather these days winter can be any time as with the other seasons. The first year we moved here we had snow at the beginning of June :o
We are lucky if we get a week of summer.
99% of the time it rains. ::)
Where are you? We had frost in mid-June last year. Most unusual.
If you are asking me Robert. We are in the Rhondda Valleys in South Wales.
On of the wettest places in the UK.
I haven't been in the Welsh valleys for donkey's years, since I used to go caving round there. I know what you mean about rain; I used to live on the Cornish moors, where it used to be under a pall of cloud while there was sun everywhere else.
:) :) My son bought an umbrella when he went to Glamorgan University!! left his overcoat in Edinburgh though.
Summer must be on it's way to Essex......I saw the first stand outside a shop with buckets and spades thismorning !!!!
p.s. it was on the sea front..... 8)
