Title: fruit bushes - dumb question?
Post by: minoko on February 05, 2006, 17:50:10
hi everyone

i've just bought some fruit bushes (gooseberry, red currant, black currant and autumn fruiting raspberries) for the allotment and i'm not sure whether to plant them all together or scatter them about the allotment for a country garden look. what do you all think?   ???

Purely from a practical viewpoint, the gooseberries and currants will require netting to protect from birds. You may consider that these should be together to make the netting easier to handle.

Agree, together is far easier to net, also you might want to consider laying weed suppressing membrane around them to help keep the plants clean, easier than weeding all the time.

Hi Minoko,

I have about 14 fruit bushes in a big fruit cage; currents, blueberries and gooseberries. It also a good place to overwinter strawberry plants in pots and other things.

At the moment it only has the sides, no top, but it will have when the baby fruit comes.

Thanks for the advice, planted them today with the currants and gooseberrys together ready to net later on and the raspberries on my daughters bed (her request)  :)
