Truly not worth the hassle. Far better to get a good outdoor type & put your effort into that.

Aldi (and probably wilkos, lidl etc) do the mini greenhouses for £7 (ish) each year around may. One of these will probably be enough for all the cucumbers you want. Plenty of other uses as well

Hello,
I am looking for a recomendation for a good variety of cucumber. We have grown them the last two years and been disapointed. The first year they were very very thick skined and last year the first few were bitten until I removed all the male flowers.
What is the best All female variety for a greenhouse in the North East??

Cheers
Vikki

I grew Crystal Lemon which were tasty and survived outside ok. The only down point was that the seeds were fairly large. That might have just been me picking them a bit late.

Not all-female but Telegraph Improved has worked well for me.

We are growing crystal lemon again as picked golfball size, they keep producing and are perfect lunch box size for daughter number one.  She couldn't get enough of them!  Burpless tasty something or the other is the other one we did, and we couldn't keep up with eating them!

Hi - I have grown Passandra F1 from Dobies for the past few years on the north Wales coast and have been very happy wth the results.  They even kept fruiting until the first week of November last year but are usually done by mid October.  They are the small type and all female with a good flavour - I had one [sometimes two  :D  ] every day with my lunch from late June onwards with plenty from the two plants to give out to the neighbours.  They seem to have good disease resistance too.

Viks,

I am in North East too and successfully grew F1 Tasty King in greenhouse.

They were far superior than supermarket variety - crunchier and packed with flavour.

I'd like to add my vote for Burpless tasty green - for outdoor growing.  I grew these outdoors last year in growbags and found them easy to grow and they tasted divine!

How many cucumber plants would I need?  I am thinking of growing either Crystal Lemon or Burpless tasty green?  I've not grown cues before.  Thanks

Hi gingerninja - I thought Tim had answered your question accurately if a bit brief.  Petita F1 is a cucumber that does best in a greenhouse which means unless you have warm nights and quite warm days with a lot of moisture to maintain humidity, then they won't crop to their potential.  The further away from the ideal conditions you go then ultimately the plants will die.

Somewhere along that scale is where you live and the summer you are about to get which makes it difficult to give a straight yes or no answer, so Tim advised you to not waste time with a greenhouse variety out of doors, as the odds against getting good results are too great.  If you are keen to grow some cucumbers, get an 'economically priced' packet of outdoor type but also try the Petita just to see how they do.  This way you are more likely to have an abundence of everything including Petita but to rely on them alone is a sure-fired guarantee for getting zilch.

Viks - may be too late now, but 'heated or cold'?

Or have I missed your reply??

Ditto what Debs has said apart from the fact that I was given mine.  I was going to buy Burpless Tasty.

I've grown Marketmore successfully outside. Any ridge cucumber ought to work; I'm trying Wautoma from the Real Seed Catalogue this year.

I had three plants last year - and we could not give away bags fast enough! With what those three plants produced we could have kept the local Somerfields stocked!

I grew Marketmore and Burpless tasty green outdoors for the first time last year & I'm repeating (geddit ::)) them this. I start the seeds off indoors in large yoghurt pots. If necessary I'll pot them on into bigger pots if there's still a danger of frosts before finally planting them out.

Hope this helps, Lishka
