Title: Vine weevil reminder
Post by: jennym on February 04, 2006, 19:40:12
Just a reminder that the dreaded vine weevil larvae are alive and kicking. I keep pots with plants in outside, by the wall for a bit of protection. Emptied out pot where plant had died and there they were, dozens of nasty fat white grubs, had a look at others nearby and fortunately no signs or symptoms. Thought I’d post this as a timely reminder to check those choice pot plants inside and out.

Yes nasty things when you notice the plants not doing well its too late the roots have gone. I water with Parvado twice a year the plants I dont want to loose seems to keep them away.

That happened to me last year, killed two of the fuschias my Gran gave me the buggers.....  Never saw an adult one though, perhaps it was a stealth weevil.

Yep a stealth bomber which comes out at night, and nibbles on green leaves check out bushes for notches out of leaves along the edge.
Then it goes down besides the main stem of plants and lays its eggs loads of them can lay hundreds of the darn things and they hatch out and eat the new roots or even corms like begoinia juicy for them.
Will come inside house/ greenhouse to lay eggs the conditions are right moist warm just perfect for them. As well as any plant planted in compost in the garden the peat keeps the eggs and youngesters warm.
Put me in mind of cockroaches but smaller with a hard shell on the back need a large spoon to crush them.

I really loath vine weevils. They make me squirm. Use nematodes to keep them at bay, but not warm enough for that yet!

New low temperature nematode will work at 6oC and above. Look out for Nemasys L ;)

I've posted this tip before, but worth another airing. I bought some old pub optics at a boot sale, and they are designed to deliver 25ml. of spirit, but I use them to water 25ml. of Provado solution into pots very quickly, and if you look on the Provado container it gives the dose for each pot size in multiples of 25ml. A doddle. Plus you get the satisfaction of knowing if some tosser breaks into your shed, they will sup the lot!

Gardenantics I like that idea, could try it with jeyes fluid down the lottie when they break into the shed again. ;D
I use the Provado but there is always the pot you miss and they get it so I recycle them.
give them to the chickens they loves these grubs but wont eat worms? I get great satifaction they eat my plants and in turn I eat them. 8)
